Problem with Visual C++ Redistributable

I cannot install applications that require it (itunes and Google Sketchup among others). They show a window that there was a problem with vcredist. I googled it but could not find a solution.

I tried uninstalling the existing version of vcredist and installing Sketchup but the problem persisted. I tried manually installing vcredist 2008 and the installation window hanged. I then tried with the 2010 version and it finished too fast.

Is there something I can do to fix it?

Can you give us the text from the error popup?

This is from Google Sketchup

Another problem, probably related is that I cannot install .NET framework, any version of it. I have downloaded the full, redistributable package and the 3.5 won’t even start, while 4.0 will hang during the installation.
This hard drive was on another computer that fried completely. I changed the mobo and CPU but kept the hard drive as it was. Maybe I should format it and do a clean install of Windows because I am having several other minor issues with it.

Sounds like a Windows re-install is in your future, IMO.

What OS are you using, and are you an administrator on the machine in question?

VC80 is the 2005 version of the VC Redistributable. It should be installed by default on Windows 7, and I think even Vista, but I’m not 100% sure of that. You could try installing it from here.

But if you’ve moved the hard drive from a different mobo/cpu it might be worth a re install just for simplicity’s sake. It’s not strictly necessary but it’s often the easiest way to be sure everything is set up right if you have your data backed up well. You could try running Window’s repair utility first and make sure you’ve installed the mobo’s drivers. That might fix most of your problems.
