Professional norms around legal recreational marijuana

I was discussing drug testing with coworkers. In our U.S and Brazil branches, passing a drug test is a requirement for hiring. None of the coworkers who were hired in a European country had to do this. When I started working here it was still possible for the factory workers to have a beer with lunch. That’s changed, but drug testing is still considered extremely invasive. It’s something done to criminals, same as getting fingerprinted.

Those who visit Amsterdam may mention getting relaxed, but no direct descriptions of how much, where, etc. CBD is legal here, and drug tests don’t differentiate between THC and CBD, so such tests would be useless. Cite

When Colorado legalized recreational use there was a company wide email stating that testing positive for marijuana was still grounds for dismissal. We have a random drug testing policy in place.

I work in a country where it’s still illegal (UK) but still wouldn’t have an issue talking about it at work. I don’t partake myself, but couldn’t care less about others, and people have been known to take it on a work jolly to Amsterdam with the bosses.

Of course, I come from a pretty hard drinking culture, so talking about getting wasted on the weekend is hardly a big deal either. We have a beer club and a wine club at work (drinks in the office at 4.30 on Fridays).

It’s a creative agency, so there’s that. But I’d say there’s a pretty relaxed attitude to these things generally. I think, like Gracer says, the view would be that it’s probably time you grew up, if anything at all.

Last week we actually got approached about marketing for an online MJH seed company. We had a brief discussion about the legalities of it, but otherwise figured we’d be fine to work on it.

I should also add that drug testing by your employer is pretty unheard if here - perhaps if you work in the emergency services or law or something.
