Good point. The editing made it seem that Gretchen was particularly exhausted, and her design obviously suffered for it. However, she still found the energy to be narcissistic and condescending.
On the runway she said she was tired of the competitions! The judges could’ve easily solved that problem. I believe there are two episodes remaining: one is Fashion Week, and the other must be the final elimination. It must have been planned that only one designer would be eliminated this week, so Gretchen got to stay.
The problem with April isn’t that she’s off-track, it’s that she’s one-track. She’s got talent, but her vision is very narrow, she can only imagine slight variations of what she likes to wear, and is young enough to still believe that doing something that isn’t to her precise personal taste is ‘not staying true to herself’. But hey, she’s 21, which gives her a very valid claim on the tunnel vision and narcissism that Gretchen has clung to into middle age.
Anyway, I was okay with her going home, but I certainly would have been equally okay with Gretchen going home. And I found all the looks disappointing. Like others have mentioned, this was the “wow us” challenge, and I remain steadfastly unwowed. All that black was boring, everyone pretty much did what they do, and even Mondo’s dress, while cute in theory, made his 93 pound model look crazy pear shaped, no woman wants a broad stripe of houndstooth across her ass.
Ever since the bridesmaid dress challenge, I’ve been pleased that Michael C has stayed in the running. The biggest thing was that the evil-bitch-woman started spreading the lie that Michael C was telling people not to vote for her, but she and Gretchen had been treating him very dismissively from the first or second episode. So as long as Michael C is in there, I’m happy to know that the others who left earlier are fuming.
I’ve watched, and it is possible that my opinions have been somewhat manipulated by editing, but they just haven’t shown him acting arrogant or mean, whereas they have shown many scenes of him congratulating people and being civil and/or friendly. I agree with him that if not for Mondo forming his own opinion and being friendly to him, he would have been in hell.
Of course, he’s not going to win – that will be Mondo. I’m pleased that Andy is still in (though he has at times acted like a jerk) – I’ll be happy as a happy clam if his collection is a dozen variations of warrior-dominatrix-wear.
But do you know who I’d like to have stayed? A truly nice person, someone who would have contributed a happier mood and added some chaos? Exaaaactly: Casanova.
So a final four with all three spots up for grabs in the end - a nail biter!
Gretchen continues to utter the best lines of the show, while the idiot savant goes all the way to FashionWeek. Good for him!
Twas good to see Christian as a judge, I remember seeing him on E! just after his PR run, when I was still blissfully ignorant of the show, thought he was a chick at first! Mondo is too eccentric to be another Mr. Fierce, can you see Mondo dishing fashion dirt with joan and crew? of course not! But I hope he has staying power as a designer.
April’s FW runway show was all pale caftans with Turbans, a complete departure from her usual POV, don’t know if she was responding with a big ol FU to the judges or what?
I was in Goodwill today, looking for pieces to make a Halloween costume, and realized that it would be a great challenge to set the designers loose in your typical thrift store (as opposed to high-end consignment shops, etc) and expecting them to create something new and fashion-forward out of the discarded clothes from the '90’s. A more directed challenge might even be better - “You have $25 to spend and a job interview in two days. Make it work!”
Gretchen is quite narcissistic but she’s only 28. That’s not middle aged. At least I hope not. Mondo’s design was good except for the back where I thought he went off the rails. That houndstooth ass splash did not work at all.
In the promos for the cheating “scandal”, Tim was shown saying something along the lines of “You’ll have to leave the competition”. To date, however, Tim has never uttered those words. I read on another web site that the bulk of the quote came from Tim telling a designer that their model had to leave the competition, but the quote was altered for the promo, replacing “she” with “you”.
