Project Runway Finale (open spoilers!)

why does everyone hate the bright colors? It’s colors that draw me to an outfit before I even see the style of it.

It’s not hatred for all bright colors. Those particular bright colors, in the pastel range of raspberry and aqua, are pretty hideous. They remind me of the 80’s, not in good way. Rami likes those fruity colors, including grape purple and bubblegum pink, not to mention that pea-soup green he used on the prom gown. Why not go a little more chromatic? I’d prefer black and beige to any of the colors in Rami’s palette. That’s just my personal taste.

I think Rami’s colors are all on the dark shaded side of the color choice (obviously I haven’t seen them in person, but at least on my screens.) They all look drab. His colors manage to be both fruity and dreary.

If a tint is a color mixed with white to become brighter and lighter (eventually ending up in pastels) it looks from my couch like Rami’s colors are all shades - colors mixed with black to look darker. They seem to have very little luminance. The fact that the colorful pieces are almost completely unrelieved doesn’t help either. There’s nothing to set them off. They just kind of suck the light.

The colors that Rami chose are not pastels, by any stretch of the imagination. They’re pretty much the opposite of pastel. He definitely chooses bright, saturated colors. I happen to like the colors he uses, but I think he has difficulty matching color with use, as with the WWF outfit.

Put me down as another one who wasn’t really impressed with the finalists’ collections. I infinitely preferred Chris’s collection, and he was eliminated. Stupid judges who would shave a chipmunk in a second, but freak out at something they’d glue to their heads. I place the blame for that solidly at Meanah Garzilla’s feet. Mostly because she irritates me.

I was rooting for Jillian to win, but her collection wasn’t cohesive enough, and she had those weird riding helmets, which didn’t make much sense since she didn’t have an equestrian theme going.

I expected Rami to win, but he didn’t. I’m not upset or anything, since I think the silhouettes of a lot of his clothes are unflattering to women’s bodies. That dress with the woven bodice was cool, until you got the knee and it had the weird pooch above it.

So we were left with Christian, who reminds me of a chihuahua affecting to be world-weary. He’s got skills, but he doesn’t have discretion – yet.

Did anyone else want to laugh maniacally when they saw that Posh Spice was the guest judge? She’s so tacky – the queen of the Spandex mini-dress. (“Coconut-boobed fashion sense” is a great way to put it, Viridiana.) They probably would have been better off having a blind guy judge the collections.

I didn’t mean pastel, sorry, you’re right about that being the absolute wrong word. I’m not sure what I meant… but on reflection, I realized that all the colors that Rami used were the colors of the Jolly Ranger candies. Think about it-- WWE challenge: pink (watermelon); Sew Not Over: purple (grape); Hershey’s dress: bright red (cherry); prom dress: dark green (sour apple); Finale: raspberry, aqua (raspberry, blue raspberry). The horrendous coat that he cut out of his final collection: lemon. Those candy colors are not for everyone. I find them to be awesomely tacky in almost every situation, and not suited for Rami’s style, which is supposed to be very classy. YMMV.

Something that might be of interst to folks: an article in the Chicago Tribune where Mo Ryan interviewed Tim Gunn about S4. Tim dishes extensively on why he called Victorya a sourpuss in the reunion show, his own diva moment, etc. A very catty and fascinating read for PRW fans.

That article is hilarious. On the Levi’s challenge: “That’s a challenge where I thought the person who won was going home. I thought Ricky’s garment was so dumb, fashion-wise. It was just a tube with stuff on it.” I can’t believe he can get away with saying that! I love Tim so much.

update to Christian’s win
If he wasn’t already a pop icon, he is as of last night’s SNL - Amy Poehler did a dead-on Christian, and Bill Hader, a fantastic Tim Gunn. Anyone catch that sketch?
