I am honestly not sure what’s going to happen now, and it’s oddly a source of hope for me, in that I think a lot of Trump voters are either going to be disappointed by what he actually does, or at least rethink some of their viewpoints when the cows come home. Yes, yes, I’m sure it’s being naive, but all along, I couldn’t shake the idea that we as a nation had to confront some of these attitudes and prejudices, and not just bury them under disapproval. Maybe this is the moment. I hope so.

Trump is not going to be able to do most of what he promised, and he is not going to be able to resolve the deep economic problems of the US lower and lower middle class that motivated them to send the Trump wild bull to the Washington DC china shop.
Trump is a narcissist who likes to read every media mention of himself every day and has said he doesn’t even mind if it’s negative, as long as he is receiving attention. Right now he is on a high that you can’t even imagine. For the next four years his name is going to be mentioned to an extent even he probably didn’t dream of in his wildest fantasies, up until a few years ago . He will do everything he can conceivably do to maintain this high beyond four years.
As others have pointed out, Trump has in the past espoused reasonable moderate political views and one might think that now he is in office he can tone it down. The problem is that moderate policies are not going to win him another term. “Never Trump” voters aren’t going to vote him back in even if he’s moderate in his first four years, and the “Make American Great Again” voters aren’t going to be happy if they perceive him as having changed nothing in his first four years.
This is a bad situation. There are historically effective techniques that can be deployed in this scenario. Favourites are creation and destruction of an internal scapegoat, starting a war to create economic growth and a common enemy, enforcing a cult of personality, and increasingly tight control on dissent.
Trump has no interest in governing well. His time and considerable energy and populist ability will be entirely devoted to promoting himself and getting re-elected by *any *means necessary.

Trump didn’t win as much as Clinton lost; it seemed impossible to have someone like Trump win but somehow her and her campaign pulled it off. It has to be an achievement of some sort.

Random polling is hard these days due to changes in technology. Cell phones, and smart phones makes it very difficult.
Mix that in with the fact that people are likely to lie about their sexism, xenophobia and bigotry that poses a significant challenge.
I think that the true pitting should be with the DNC for trusting suspect numbers and dropping their guard.
