PS3: PSN game recommendations

I’m looking for some recommendations for PSN games for the PS3.

Just got a PS3 and have started looking at the small downloadable games. I’ve bought pixeljunkie shooter and am aware of the other pixel junkie games but haven’t played them. I’m also going to get WipeOut HD but other than that I don’t know what’s good out there.

Anyone played/bought any nice time fillers that they’d like to talk about?

Flower. It’s a very…different sort of game. I paid $5 for it, and it’s a great little relaxer when I don’t want to be running around killing things. Great use of the 6-axis controller, beautiful scenery, great music - it’s a solid little game.

Download the Fat Princess demo, and play through it to your heart’s content. The demo only gives you 1 map, but you can still play online (which blew my mind - what demo does that?!). It’s a ton of fun.

Shatter looked pretty neat.

And I think PSN finally got Castle Crashers a couple months ago. can’t go wrong with that.

I’ve played a few minutes of both Flower and Fat Princess. Flower looked great but I couldn’t get my head around FP at all. Suppose i should try the demo out and see does it make a bit more sense now.

Shatter looks nice. A fancy breakout. I’ll give that a look as well as Castle Crashers.

Start with the single player. Its difficulty level is pretty low, letting you really get a feel for the different characters, the resources, the upgrades, etc. I went through a game with each character trying things out.

Another vote for Flower - if you’re looking for calming, relaxing way to explore and kill some time it’s a great game, as is it’s spiritual predecessor Flow. Neither one have scores or lives but still have objectives, and for lack of a better description they are just pretty and fun to play with.

Zen Pinball – an excellent pinball game with 4 tables + local and online multiplayer.

High Velocity Bowling – fun, cheap bowling again with online / offline multiplayer

PAIN - Sort of like billiards in that you have to aim an object and bounce it into targets… In this case the object is a person that you bounce into exploding boxes, windows and destructible items on a crowded city street. Crude, but fun.

Zuma and Peggle – both started out as web-based flash games but their PS3 counterparts are worth a few bucks to pick up.

Super Stardust HD - one of the earliest PSN games but still one of the best… Kind of a super maxed-out version of Asteroids. Great graphics and sound + multiplayer.

Originally a disc-based game, Burnout Paradise comes up for sale now and again on the PSN. If you can pick it up for under $20 it’s well worth the purchase.

Have fun!

Super Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars

Learning curve is semi steep but it’s fun once you get up to speed. Minigames help with learning process. Online/offline MP. Hella fun.

Search youtube for SARPBC to see some game action.

Yay, a PSN thread!

A bunch of these games came out of Sony Santa Monica where I work: Flow, Flower, the PixelJunk games, Fat Princess.

I provided design support on Fat Princess … Titan Studios did most of the work, but as the in-house designer at Sony I provided a lot of suggestions, critique and play testing. And I’m actually in the middle of working on the PSP release right now!

I’ll second Zen Pinball - they also have a fifth table available to add on, and a sixth in the works.

The Last Guy is a top-down puzzle-ish game - run your guy through the zombie-terrorized streets of cities rounding up trapped citizens to lead them to rescue.

Everyday Shooter - sort of an updated Asteroids where the background music is affected by the actions of your ship.

I would highly suggest WipEoutHD. Great racer. Also Battelfield 1942 is a great game for $15. If you like shumps, Soldner X:Himmulsturmer is a grueling game, but rewarding.

I second PAIN - altho if you get all the add-on gameplay content for it (not including the extra characters) it’s more like $30 total, it’s very much worth it if you’re into flinging someone into an old lady and knocking her down a flight of stairs into a subway station, to be run over by said subway train.

And if you’re willing to part with an extra $2, you can launch George Takei instead, and hear him say very droll things while you fling him around a high school gym.

It’s quite juvenile, and I quite like it.
