PS3 recommendations

I have finally got myself a PS3.

I currently have 3 games - FIFA 12 (The reason I bought the console), Little Big Planet (I have a 5 yr old daughter) and Space Marine (Impulse buy - was half price at the place i got my 2nd controller)

What family games would you recommend?

Are there any decent RPG games for PS3?

How long have you been a gamer?

Not sure if you’re looking for new stuff, or if the entire PS3 catalog is open.

Assuming the latter I’ll recommend The following RPGs:

Elder scrolls oblivion, Fallout 3, the draogn age series and the mass effect series (although mass effect 1 is not available for PS3 and it would be a shame if you missed it. If you have any sort of PC that might run ME1 I’d recommend you get it for the PC, then play the rest of the trilogy on the PS3 if you want.)

I hear Uncharted and Metal Gear solid are two of PS3’s crow jewels in terms of action/cinematic gameplay.

Been a pc gamer for ages, got Dragon Age I on Pc and have played Baldur’s gate, NWN, NWNII etc etc Also like Civ and football manager games on PC.

Bah! What are you doing messing with consoles then?!

So in light of this revelation I’m assuming you are looking only for PS3 exclusives.

Some other PS3 games I’m jealous of:

Demon Souls and Darksouls - hardcore action RPG’s.

God of war series

Read Dead Redemption - think grand theft auto but in the old west.

All my friends are FIFAing and CODing and I felt left out!

Also the PS3 plays Blu-ray and streams movies (it does in UK anyway if you have appropriate membership with lovefilm)
Now I have it, I want to get as much value as possible

Saints Row 2 is what Grand Theft Auto should have been. But, it is not a family game in the least.

The third comes out next month so you should be able to pick this up cheap.

I just bought Driver: San Francisco. Mostly because I’ve been a big fan of the series since the first *Driver *came out on PS1. And also because I used to live in SF and for some reason I thought the game would present an accurate model of the city (like the *True Crime *(LA and NY) game did). Alas, it is only a pseudo-representation of the city with all the proper landmarks, but no relation to actual geography.

I digress.

If you like driving games, I recommend it. It does have a weird story mode where the main character is in a coma and all the game action takes place in his head (so far, I’m not done yet), but it sort of works.

It’s pure driving. No getting out of the car to shoot things or anything like that. All the cars are licensed (you drive a Dodge Challenger not a Bob’s Flooglesnapper or whatever). And it’s just enough on this side of realistic to hold your attention, but just enough on the other side of archade-y to be incredibly fun.

Some of the missions are effing hard though.

PS3 is not very family oriented. The selections are very slim in that category. That being said, the only “family oriented” game I have is called Singstar. Hook up your two microphones and PS Eye and you’re set. My daughters (4 and 2) love singing/babbling into the mic and seeing themselves on screen.

I’ve never really tried RPGs out, I leave those to play on my PC. Below are some of the games I recommend in no particular order:

Metal Gear Solid 4 (I loved the whole series), GTA IV,The Assassin’s Creed series,The Fear series,The God of War series, Crysis 2, Darksiders (similar to GoW, but with Heaven/Hell instead of Mythology),Red Faction: Armaggedon (I wasn’t a big fan of RF Guerilla),
Resistance 2/3, Burn Out, Battlefield Bad Company 1/2,Crysis 2, Far Cry 2, Bulletstorm

That should keep you busy for a bit!

Thanks all

Your daughter would probably love the Toy Story 3 game.

are 1 & 2 any good?

MLB: The Show is the best baseball game I have ever seen or played. And its family friendly.

For a non-family game, I would recommend Dead Space 1 and 2…and play it through a surround system cranked up and with the lights off. You will thank me later (after you wash your shorts).

Worse reviews than 3 and don’t appear to be available for PS3, anyway.

Yep. These games do have some weird quirks, though, and I swear that rubberband AI gets invoked at times.

Final Fantasy 13 is a long-running Japanese RPG series

I was going to recommend this, but family was stated and as said, Saints Row is not family by any stretch of the imagination. Incredibly fun game though.

It’s not exclusive, but the two Portal games are simply brilliant. You cannot go wrong. Also, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus have been rereleased for PS3 on one disc with a new game - The Last Guardian - coming soon. If you want a PS exclusive, those are the ones to get. Team Ico is a company that honestly turns video games into an art form. They are family friendly but mature in story with challenging game play. Simply brilliant.

Lastly, I’ll recommend the InFamous series. The language is a bit salty at times, but the games are fun with the second improving upon the first. The controls are solid, and the “moral choice” mechanic can add for continued gameplay.

SR2 is amazing, full of violence, mayhem, insanity and all kinds of extreme entertainment.

I’m looking for SR3 to be one of the most fun games ever made. Very far from family friendly, though.

Not exclusively family! Some non famly games for my enjoyment are A OK, I just also want to know some I can play with my daughter, or that she would enjoy herself.

How old is your daughter? For instance, depending on the age, Assassin’s Creed really isn’t THAT bad, content-wise. The concepts are rather mature, but it’s not Ultra Death Gorefest, it’s more of a tale of conspiracy and assassination that doesn’t stray far from a typical, well written PG13 movie (imo). Nothing a well mannered older child couldn’t get through with some parental guidance, keeping in mind it’s a single player game so one of you will be watching the other play until you switch turns.

I have a 5 yr old and a 6 week old. She is really enjoying Little Big Planet. A lot of that is down to the fact we can play it with her though I believe.
