I mentioned to a friend the other night that I used to love playing adventure/RPG games, but that my cheap laptop can’t run them. Today’s games just overclock the machine and it overheats and shuts down and/or lags so badly that the game is unplayable.
He has offered to lend me a Playstation 3. I’ve never had one, never played one, never, ever used any kind of gaming console, only desktop computers/laptops. I’m interested, but also have no idea to get/play games I’d like.
I used to love playing in-depth adventure games that were big on exploring but light on “fighting” and weren’t just shoot-em-up games. Except for Starseige Tribes, I LOVED that game. Yes there was a lot of shooting and all but there was no blood and gore and the point was to capture the flag, not just mindlessly kill foes.
I absolutely hate the 2-dimensional “Super Mario” type game, and wasn’t very impressed with the few empire-building ones I’ve tried, they just seemed tedious. I’m referring to the ones where you are looking down at your “world” from above and your characters are just small icons running around on the screen.
Based on the above, can anyone recommend some great, addictive, very immersive game that I could try with this thing? And also, how do I actually, y’know, obtain the games? Can I download them or do they come as some kind of physical cartridge I have to insert or something?
Any help for this gaming noobie would be appreciated! Thanks!
My game suggestion is Just Cause 2. You can simply shoot anyone who gets in your way but it’s not required and part of the fun is trying to get all 300 collectibles.
I can’t see a thread like this and NOT plug the Mass Effect Trilogy.
There is quite a bit of fighting in it (all gun/space magic related), but honestly, the fighting is only barely a quarter of what that game is TRULY about. You literally spend most of the game talking to your squadmates, visiting other planets and learning about the history and lore of the entire universe.
You can buy the entire trilogy in one package super-duper cheaply at GameStop.
The Uncharted series is perhaps one of the best looking games on the PS3. There’s some shooting, but it’s mixed nicely with puzzle solving. If you like the original, you’ll love the sequels.
Yeah that’s one of the most fun games ever. The parachute/grappling-hook mechanism is totally absurd - I mean, it might as well just be Spider-Man, it’s so impossible - but it is a blast to play. The environment is super cool to explore.
Heavy Rain is a must for the novelty of the gameplay mechanisms alone. It’s an “interactive cinema” type game with a bizarre rambling plot and a number of possible endings for the different characters you have to play as, so it does actually have replay value. Beautiful to look at. The voice acting blows at times though.
GTA V is cool too, super cool/realistic environment to explore, ridiculous characters, clever jokes hidden on every single billboard, poster, clothing logo, etc…awesome soundtrack. You don’t need to go on rampages and kill hundreds of people and blow up every vehicle you can hit with a sticky bomb…you can just play the missions, which rarely involve violence against random people, and wander around the different parts of the city either walking or driving, or riding a motorcycle, bike, or flying a plane. On the other hand, if you do want to cause chaos, there are a million different ways to do it. It even records the statistics like the longest you’ve led the police on a chase before being killed or captured, and you can try to outdo your scores.
