I adore and love my dogs deeply; the people I love (and even some I just kinda like) are more valuable to me than the dogs. People I just vaguely know/know of and strangers are not.*See disclaimer below.
I don’t knowingly watch any TV where an animal might die and I check DoesTheDogDie.com before I attend a film that may have some pups or kitties in it; in my unfortunate experience, an animal is sometimes introduced just in order to put it in danger.
*Helpless little kids and sweet old ladies in peril, even strangers/movie characters, destroy me. I’m not allowed to watch The Road to Bountiful ever again.
My relationship with my dogs is far beyond anything I’ve ever experienced with people. It’s not a child-adult relationship, nor is it sexual in nature, eliminating most types of human relationships. Dogs are clearly sentient, and we become attuned to each other in a way that never happens between people. We spend more time together and depend on each other more than people do.
I have other livestock and would be quite upset if someone abused them. More than if humans abused each other.
Humans chose to do that to each other; animals don’t.
I agree. When I mention that I really hate animal abuse, I get attacked with “So, you think animals are better than humans?” Well, in your case, YES is what I want to respond. Caring for animals does not mean it negates the care of humans! I like ice cream but I like chocolate cake too!
I generally prefer animals to my human kind probably due to the fact that many people are capable of cruelty and greed amongst other uncaring attributes . I like to care for all living creatures but humans won’t always let you and are quite nasty with it. Even smiling at someone you don’t know often brings on a surly look. I must assure you I’m a very normal person in every other way my pet
animals tell me so!
It’s one thing not to be an animal lover, but people who abuse or torture animals are usually fucked up in the head. In fact, it’s generally considered a major red flag – don’t most serial killers start with animals?
Some of it is the Bambi factor, but animals are genuinely fun to have around and pets provide a lot of love and entertainment. I think it’s that unconditional love thing, the fact that they depend on us, and really don’t demand a lot. (Well, not a WHOLE lot). Are humans more important? Of course*. That doesn’t mean you can’t love animals too. As someone said, there isn’t a limited supply of love that you have to ration out.
This is an extremely disturbing thing. I eat meat and have no objecting to hunting (in fact, I despise deer, because they’re a total menace). However, teaching your kids to go out and shoot at random animals just for the express purpose of keeping them from getting emotionally attached to animals is really, really messed up. You don’t have to love animals to think it’s not cool to go out and like, cause them pain just for the hell of it. THAT, is “bizarre and unhealthy”.
(There’s such thing as a “happy medium”)
*Unless we’re talking about serial killers, or terrorists, or people like that. Then fuck them.
