Well, my dog finally began having her puppies this morning. Nine live with two still births so far. It’s taken almost five hours also. Being that this is the first time she’s had pups, it REALLY freaked her out when the first one was born :eek:Actually, after the second one, she tried to run upstairs to get away from it
Now, she’s doing just fine with them and they’re all resting comfortably…ON MY DAMN BED!!!
Oh well, I can always get a new mattress
Xploder, the wife, three kids and friend, two cats, two dogs and NINE puppies…
It reminds me of when my dogs were born (they’re 11 now). I was living in a warehouse, in the middle of a dispute with the owners (19 months without electricity, but that’s another story). Their mothers gave birth 24 hours apart and we were blessed with 18 puppies. Fortunately we had lots of room and the dogs had their own bathroom/pen, but nevertheless the following months (it took about 3 months to find homes for all of them, barring my 2) were very stressfull (avoiding doggie landmines and self-propelled canine obstacles).
BTW, what kind of dogs ? Mine are mixed Staffie, Dobie, Lab and English sheepdog (the mix proportions differ slightly from one to the other, different mothers, same father),
Well, seeing as how both parents were strays that some evil being dropped off, it’s kinda hard to tell. I believe that the male is damn near purebred black lab and the mother seems to be a sort of miniature collie-shepard mix. In other words, we have some pups that have cow markings. We also have a few that are pure black in color and one or two that have a lot of brown. The cow pups kinda crack me up when I look at them. They seriously look like little mini-cows.
Doh! (Not Homer SImpson “Doh!” - more like “Awww…” Hard to imagine if you haven’t heard it I guess, but it’s the sound my friends and I make over puppies and similarly adorable and furry living things) I loooooooooooooooooooooove puppies! PUPPIES! WHhheeeeeeeeee!
The best thing about puppies is their sweet breath! Man if I could bottle that stuff, that would be the best aromatherapy ever… feeling down? Whiff a little puppy breath!
You are so lucky. I envy you. Puppies are the best thing in the universe, just about.
(Of course, I don’t envy you when you start to wean them and mom stops eating their poop. That part, you can have.)
Congrats on the pups, but consider a few responsibilities that need to be done. Baby critters are fun and cute, but please take the time and effort for proper care to maintain their health and to reduce pet overpopulation.
Please get mom and pups checked out by your veterinarian ASAP. Discuss health care including proper nutrition, preventative medications for heartworms, fleas, and internal parasites.
Get vaccines updated on her(and the other dog)if their vaccine history is unknown or they are overdue.
The pups themselves should start on their vaccine series at 7-8 weeks of age - discuss the reccommended protocol with your vet.
Plan on spaying the female after the pups have been weaned. Have you had the male dog neutered? Get that done too.
Consider this - thousands of pets are euthanized yearly because of shelter overcrowding and lack of quality homes. Please don’t contribute to the statistics.
My apologies. I didn’t mean to come off as an ass. What I meant was that ever since I was a little kid, we’ve always had dogs and puppies so I knew what you meant.
ITR Champion:
No thanks on the newspaper as my wife seems to be collecting old ones from all over the damn place. Now I know we’re gonna need them but where am I gonna keep them all at until needed???
