I will be traveling to the Emerald Isle on business sometime in January (dates yet to be determined). I’m looking for general advice/things I must do(avoid) from Irish dopers. Also, if any of you are from around Cork I’d love to raise a pint with you.
My distant time zone is going the other way, but I wanted to make one suggestion that might not even be relevant any longer.
When I went to Ireland five years ago one of the places I went was the Fota Wildlife Park. It was right near Cork. A wonderful place where you could get pretty close to the wildlife.
Cobh was also a neat town to visit. I believe it is the final port of the Titanic. (I might be wrong, it was a long time ago that I was there.)
A trip to the blarney Stone is cliched, but who cares, I enjoyed myself there. And judging by the many stories you tell, I think it is an appropriate castle for you to visit.
For me, just walking around Cork was a joy. The people were nice and it was a nice place to walk around.
Heh. Now all the people who actually live there are gonna come in here and tell you how my ideas are American Shite which should only be tried if you are brain dead.
Have a great time. Drink an extra pint or two for me.
Cork, eh? Plenty to do and see in Cork. Great nightlife, and a lot of history…
And once again, I totally agree with Priccar. I’m not a native to Cork, so I can’t really advise you about what to do there, but there is loads on the Net about Cork.
There’s no chance of you being in Dublin over your trip?
I’ve had Murphy’s, thanks, I’ll stick to the good stuff.
TwistofFate; I’m afraid not. I would love to be able to extend my time and do some traveling. I’ve wanted to get to Ireland for years. Unfortunately, I just burned all my vacation and need to save what I’m acruing now for May, when I become a father (not a mother, despite what people call me). So this time it will just be business, with a weekend thrown in if I’m not a complete idiot.
Oh, and Pat – all of those stories a literally and objectively true. Ask anyone who was there ;).
Fota Wildlife Park sounds great. BTW – can someone tell me how cold Cork might be in mid-January? This Florida boy might need to break out something special in teh way of apparel (like a shirt with long sleeves).
Was the thread title too punnish?
Is there really only one lad from the Emerald Isle posting on this board?
Did Cromwell’s visit in the 17th century turn them against tourists forever?
Did the crushing disappointment of realizing that I wasn’t really asking for a piece of oak to be inserted into my anatomy cause them to click awy in disgust and disillusionment?
sigh Will there be no one with whom I can raise a pint to the fight against ignorance?
It’s a small island, so you may be tempted to go to both halves. That’s fine, but expect to be stopped by armed soldiers, and not just at the border. No sudden moves, and paperwork out where you don’t have to reach for it.
And don’t admit you’re part Irish, or they will assume you are smuggling guns.

In the last few years things have changed a lot. Border crossings are being dismantled. The last few times I’ve crossed the border there were no soldiers at all.
I have never in my life (even during some bad times) had any real trouble up in North and I have a southern accent and have never tried to hide it.
Also the subject of this thread is about Cork and possibly Dublin which are both in the Republic where none of this stuff happens.
Ireland is a safe place to visit and you should really get up to date on your travelling tips.
Mostly scots, welsh, german, and a few non-specific ne’er-do-wells.[sub]I suppose those could be Irish;)[/sub]
I probably won’t get confirmation of my schedule for a week or two, but I hope it works out that I can meet up with some of you. It will be my first international trip without the wife since I was married, and I need someone to help me get into mischief.
I was all excited after reading Mr B’s advice. I have been detained by authorities in 3 countries and was looking forward to adding a 4[sup]th[/sup]. Australia proved woefully trusting in that regard. I scarcely garnered a second glance from police, customs, or drug-sniffing-beagles. sigh
Coldie – you are determined to get me into trouble, aren’t you? Good man. I’ll brush up on my Texas twang immediately.
Hey! There’s no Celtic games in January, so all my weekends are free. The thought of spending them all in Dublin has been sending shivers down my spine. C’mon boys let’s go to Cork!
It is a really lovely city BTW. Reminds me a bit of San Francisco.
