Put some organs in my pie - NYC

So thanks to Harry Potter and that GQ thread, I am ready and willing to try a meaty British pie. NYC being the melting pot and all, I should be able to find a place that sells them. But I can’t.

So, anyone know where I can sample some steak & kidney goodness around here?

Any British pub that serves food will invariably serve steak and kidney pie, here’s one I found googling:

The Ship Inn: http://www.nycbeer.org/new-jersey/ship-brew-review.html

Thanks, MC. Unfortunately, that one is pretty far from where I live, and I suffer from a severe lack of car. I’ve been checking around pubs in the city, but most of the people I ask just look at me funny.

Well, if the roommate ever deigns to toss us his keys, we can drive out to NJ. But I want meaty pie NOW!

I had a fairly decent pork&chicken pie at a Ren Faire, it was basically a home-made Hot Pocket. Does the Brit meat pie tradition differ?

hums- ‘Attend the tale of Sweeny Todd…’

This is what I’m trying to find out! Is it like a small pot pie? A hot pocket? What I’m hoping for is a small pie filled with mostly-ground up, solid meat paste. That’s how I imagine it, although I’m probably wrong.

Maybe I should just use this as an excuse for a little trip over the ocean?

You can have steak and kidney pie and steak and kidney pudding (the difference is the pudding is steamed).

I steak and kidney pie is steak and kidney chopped up into chunks (not too small) in a gravy with the top covered with puff pastry.

That’s disappointing.

I always imagined meat pudding to be thick, dark pudding (meaning “creamy, mushy paste”), made with blood, with chunks of meat thrown in.

That’s black pudding you’re thinking of (made out of blood), that’s delicious too best served as part of a mixed grill.

Yum, that link makes my mouth water.

I’m confused. Isn’t “blood pudding” sausage? Like this - http://www.hotelcis.pl/sylwester/kaszanka.jpg

Yes, blood pudding does look like sausage, it’s made out of cream and blood though.

Off to England I go, then.

I don’t know what part of Brooklyn you live in, but if you’re close enough to Park Slope, you might want to try The Chip Shop (383 5th Ave., Brooklyn). According to this review, it has a good selection of British specialties, inlcuding Steak and Kidney Pie.

Some of the places on this page might also work.

Goodness, mhendo, the holy grail and all! I might stop in tommorow morning, that first place is about 15 mins. away by train.

Thanks!
