Putting the adult child on insurance - QUESTION

I am waitingwaitingwaiting all afternoon to get through to the medical center to ask this question, thought I’d ask here first as I don’t seem to be able to get through to them for quite a while!

My husband and I are covered by his company’s insurance plan. We put our 23 year old daughter on our plan last month. We don’t get the insurance cards in the mail until end of December. She wants to see a doctor soon, but should she call the insurance company, or pay up front at the desk and hope to get reimbursed, or would the doctor’s office call the insurance company?

(I’m still on hold. I think I’ll find an answer here on the SD before the med ctr.)

My WAG is that there’s nothing magical about the card. The office just needs all the relevant information: your insurance provider, your specific insurance plan, co-pays, any relevant subscriber numbers, and contact information for the insurance provider. Do you have that information on anything else they’ve mailed you? Any chance you can get that information from the insurer or husband’s HR department online or by phone?

If she’s on the policy and make sure she actually is, some insurance policy’s do not start coverage till the first of the month, then all you need is a number.

Get a number from the insurance company for verification and the policy number for your kid. Then call ahead to the doctor’s office and inform them you don’t have the card but here is the policy number, the phone number to check and the name. They can go ahead and get everything ready in advance.

Ah, crap! Her insurance does not start up until January 1, 2011.

This stinks. I guess if you get really sick you’re out of luck.
