Which two Who song ends with “like a brook trickling down” (assuming I’m hearing the lyrics correctly)? Ok, one is “The Song Is Over” on the “Who’s Next” album. What about the other one? And, on which album?
I’m sure there’s some big Who fan who’ll appreciate this question.
Thanks,
Probably “Pure and Easy,” which is quoted at the end of “The Song is Over.”
“Pure and Easy” was originally a Pete Townshend song that appeared on one of his solo albums. It was released after “Who’s Next,” so it would seem it was written and even recorded, but not included.
Later, the Who did a version of “Pure and Easy” on “Odds and Sods.”
There once was a note
Pure and easy
playing so free
like a breath, rippling by
It’s my understanding this was going to be a repeating motif in a concept project called Lifehouse (which to my pleasent amazement was recently mentioned in another thread) much like See me, feel me, touch me, heal me is a repeating motif in Tommy. But Lifehouse never came together, and, as Smapti mentions, most of the songs written for it ended up on Who’s Next, with a few remainders on Odds 'n Sods.
To be precise, Pure and Easy was actually the first of the songs intended for Lifehouse to be written (sometime around September 1970 according as Townshend recalls it). The recording that appeared on Who Came First, Pete’s 1972 solo album, was a home demo which the Who’s recordings were based on. The Who recorded Pure and Easy twice in early 1971 for release on the aforementioned Lifehouse album. When Lifehouse was abandoned and Who’s Next came into being, Pure and Easy was cut due to space constraints. As was mentioned, the Who’s second recording of the song first appeared on Odds and Sods in 1974, and the first Who recording is now available on the CD reissue of Who’s Next.
