Was watching the Miami-Tampa Bay game last night, and had to throw in my two cents here.
How does Ryan Leaf have a job???
Given, he was playing with the 2nd string lineup, but he managed to go something obscene like 0 for 2 and an interception in five or six plays. Absolutely horrendous.
Not that starter Brad Johnson did much better. Sigh
But one of the stats shown was that Leaf has the lowest career rating of any QB since 1980, with something like 13 TDs and 33 INTs.
So, any other votes for worst QB on the NFL payroll?
Oh god, I watched that game and I CRIED in the last 9 seconds. Brad Johnson sucks, I don’t know why we paid so much money for him. First 2 plays, he’s sacked in both of them. 3rd play, he fumbles and Miami recovers on the 5 yard line!!!
I will never ever understand why they dropped Shaun King down to 2nd string for Brad Johnson. King is a much better QB in my opinion, hell, he got them to the NFC Championships 2 years ago. He’s cool under pressure, and he’s got a great arm. If they’d left him in the game for the 2nd half, Tampa definitely would have won.
BTW. I am a huge Tampa fan, and when that little punk, rookie, 3rd string QB threw the game winning Hail Mary into the endzone, I whimpered all the way outside to tell my dad what happened.
But I still winced when the Miami kid flipped and almost broke himself in half.
I’m a Skins fan, we were kinda happy to get rid of him. Not that were doing any better now, with our marquee QB, Todd Husak!
Steamrollin’ our way to more 20-0 blowouts against powerhouses like the Chiefs, the only team the Chargers beat last year…
To be fair, if it were a regular season game, he would have stayed in. At least you can be happy they got WunderLeaf out of there. Think it would have come to the last minute with him in?
I frickin’ missed the end because I figured “It’s late, I’m tired, and there is no way some 3rd string guy is going to score with a minute left against one of the top three defenses in the NFL.” Oops. Be some interesting payback if they play again. Maybe Mr. Sapp will knock out Johnson and King just to have some fun playing with #3. >:)
Christ, that looked painful. I caught it out of the corner of my eye at first and it looked like he’d executed some weird Greg-Louganis-eqsue diving move, but on the replay it was significantly less graceful and a whole frickin’ lot more painful.
Hey, Lady, I missed the first seven or eight minutes, since the Toronto Sports bar I was visiting had to change to satellite to accomodate my request to watch the game. Still, from what I saw (tuned in just at the fumble or so), it looked like Coleman and Walker had more than a couple of lapses on the left side of the line. Dangerous if the Bucs have to go through all year like that, for Shaun King, Brad Johnson or anyone. So let’s let Johnson have a bit of a fair shake.
Second, the acquisition of Johnson in the offseason seems to have lit a fire in Mr. King, he reported in his best shape ever at training camp and seems really prepared to run the offense. So hopefully one of two things will happen: a) this first exhibition game is a fluke and Johnson will do a serviceable job or b) he’ll stink, and Shaun will be ready to step in.
Personally I’d have preferred that they spent the Johnson money on a quality, experienced left tackle, but I don’t think that there was really anyone available. I love Shaun King, but he did have some passes that were just a wee bit off, which is why they went for Johnson in the offseason. From what I heard the starting defense looked pretty rusty as well. We’ll see on September 9th.
As for Leaf, yeah, he just seems to be a case of college wunderkind who didn’t pan out in the pros. Hamilton is, IMHO, a much better QB. Hope he also gets a chance to take some snaps in the regular season.
To the OP, Akili Smith may be a worse QB than Leaf, if that’s possible.
Jargent, I hope you saw the last 9 seconds in the highlights. It was horrible. I’m sitting here yelling at the TV, “When you’re in the endzone, you SWAT the ball, SWAT, not CATCH!!!”.
Yeah, that did look painful. I fully expected that to be the career-ending injury for the kid.
Hey ShibbOleth, I haven’t seen you in a while.
Yeah, I think the competition of a veteran QB has lit a fire in King. He’s not used to being challenged as top dog, ever since he took Trent Dilfer’s position when he broke his collarbone a couple years ago.
I agree about buying a good left tackle, they got one from Arizona ST, or something like that over the draft. I hope he works out.
