Of course, in his endless humility, he was probably pretty embarrassed by being forced to tell everyone who he’d sponsored in the ATMB thread, since it’s illegal to sponsor someone on the SDMB without making a PSA about it. Wouldn’t want to end up in the slammer.
If you have a better way to alert other prospective sponsors that a given request has been covered, I’m all ears.
He just can’t win, can he?
Your name is on there too, you evil fucker.
How dare you give to other people!
Ban them! Ban them all!
Not worth it.
Come on this is bullshit at this point. People ask for help in a public thread and others help. I established the habit of posting the confirmations as early on in the thread or the prior thread, we had some accidental double subscriptions paid.
It is actually tougher not to post the confirmation than to do so.
You seem to have some legit grievances against why you dislike Q.E.D. Blasting him for helping others is just wrong. He does junior mod at times and his condescending in the complaints about the search thread was a little dickish, but damn these seem minor to me. But too actually complain that he has helped other members and then bash him because **other ** posters have mentioned that as offsetting his free membership as an SDSAB is just petty.
Jim
Did you think that linking to his personal financial problem would raise people’s opinion of you?
Actually, my name is on there because I asked for sponsorship and accepted it (from What Exit?–thanks again, Jim!). In case you’re curious, I donated the equivalent amount to a local mayoral candidate from the political party we’re both a member of. I didn’t have a credit card or PayPal account at the time to buy a membership with.
Q.E.D., I hadn’t considered the question of avoiding duplicate sponsorships. My bad.
I wasn’t the one who brought up the fact that he’s sponsored people–it was just a convenient thing to latch on to, and I jumped in because I didn’t think about the technical aspects of sponsoring a membership. I apologize to Q.E.D. for that (already have, actually, but after your simulpost.
No. Which is why I edited it out after someone gave me a gentle sanity check.
No problem. Apology accepted–and allow me to extend one of my own. As wring alluded to, I linked to your post in the sponsorship thread but thought better of it and edited it out. That was childish and petty, and I’m sorry.
saw the post, not the edit.
Apology accepted. I didn’t see it anyway, and wouldn’t have known wring was talking about my post.
Yes, please latch on to a minor paranthetical note at the end of the rest of my post to avoid the fact that you were wrong. That will help you seem smarter.
I can see from the thread where the knowledge could have come from, but again, it really doesn’t matter as I never said he was responsible for others’ posts and once again I never said he was bringing it up himself. I said it was sickening the way people brought up his sponsorships as a warped defense of his behavior. I didn’t say he was doing it himself.
I don’t give a fuck how many people he has sponsored - it doesn’t give him license to be an ass and it’s not a defense of his behavior that should be used by others to support his asshat behavior and **that **was my point. You’re welcome to disagree with me, but it doesn’t make the argument pointless.
QED: Blah, blah, blah
Other poster: QED, you’re being an ass
QED Fans: But he’s a generous ass, so it’s ok.
That last part is what I’m objecting to (well, that and the fact the QED often makes asinine statements posturing himself as an ADMIN or Mod of the board or is all-knowledgeable about everything)
Do you get it now or should I type more slowly?
Who is saying that, BTW? I know I sure wasn’t - I was rebutting what I thought was a feeling that since he had no direct financial stake in the SDMB via a paid membership, his position to argue with those who paid for memberships was weak. Who are the ones saying, in effect, because he paid for other memberships he gets an implicit or explicit pass? It would help if you would list the “QED Fans” by name, please, so we know who your ire is directed towards and can see examples of this behavior.
I hate being the new guy. There’s no intimacy for me right now.
I’m going to go hang out with Der Trihs, my new friend I made in all the threads I’ve posted in regarding the military and/or terrorism and/or Gorge W Bush…
No, the fact that what you claim never actually happens, however, does.
How come **Una’**s just says “SDSAB” and yours is “Straight Dope Science Advisory Board”?
It’s not the size of the title that matters, it’s how you use it, that counts.
Actually your post (#19 in this thread) is exactly what triggered my “irk” -not ire, cause frankly, I’m not wasting that much energy on someone I don’t know on a message board. Yes, i can see on re-reading that you, in this case, weren’t defending his specific behavior, however, once again QED’s grand generosity, in superlative form is brought up. He has “dug deep” for those “numerous memberships”. Yah, so we’ve heard. A million times.
And no, I’m not going to tax my own time or the sick hamsters by typing in QED on a search. Actually, with a 3-letter user name it wouldn’t work anyway. The place may blow up. I’ve seen it before in other threads - I didn’t just make it up out of the blue - and I stand by my opinion - the guy often comes across as an ass and I’m sick and tired of hearing about his alleged generosity regardless of who’s saying it and his alleged generosity does not give him an excuse to be an ass. As I said to begin with - some people give because they’re generous, some people give in order to appear generous. It seems in his case, appearances count. Period. You’re welcome to disagree, of course, but I’m not going to continue repeating myself. This isn’t exactly a new revelation and I highly doubt I’m either alone in that opinion nor the first one to say it.
I find that when I am accused of having a reading comprehension problem, it always helps for the poster to type naked, rather than slowly.
