I also like how they go shopping at Pier One and Bed, Bath & Beyond, which are within the budgets of most “real people.”
Maybe no one follows Kyan’s shaving advice because even straight guys are hypnotized by him during the instructions, dreamily thinking, “Oh, more Kyan!”
What Not to Wear (the US version, anyway) is not well-executed. The hosts have no chemistry and little wit.
JuanitaTech:
I think Wayne and Stacy, the hosts of What Not to Wear, are kind of bitchy and mean. What terrifies me about WNTW is this 360-degree mirror they force the makeover person to go into and see their horrible clothing from every angle. It gives me nightmares. I wouldn’t turn down $5000 to buy a new wardrobe, though.
Avacodos, bannana, and oatmeal never seemed very appetizing - until Kyan smeared it all over his face. rrrrowrr
This episode has been my least favorite so far. Vincent wasn’t particularly interesting, although his wife was adorable. The guys seemed kind of bored with him and it seemed like more of a chore to clean his place and make him drink tea. It was starting to get a little catty when Carson made fun of the note Vincent was playing as backup for the be-wigged Cleftones, then after hearing him sing, declared that maybe playing that note wasn’t such a bad career. But then they pulled it together and realized that although his song lacked style or grace, Vincent’s intent was sweet. It looks like they try really hard to end the show on a “Hooray for him!” note.
Have I mentioned that I heart Kyan? My husband insists that I could never please him, y’know, orally like a man could. I was very disheartened and declared that perhaps I couldn’t please anyone that way and should just stop trying altogether. I think this show just may mean the end of our marriage. He’s just jealous of my burning desire for Kyan.
I had heard that Wayne from the US WNTW had been turfed, but he’s still on the website. I did see a pic of him showing his long hair having been cut off and he looked way better. He worked better with the one guy who was on WNTW than he does with the women. Stacy is just icky.
Now the British WNTW is great. Trinny and Susannah are mean at times but never just for the sake of being mean. Their barbs are constructive and they also point out their own figure flaws and use them to illustrate their points. If you have the choice watch the British version on BBC America.
I have this fantasy where I shave against the grain and my sweet sweet Kyan punishes me…
They make snarky comments, but they’re not funny, snarky comments- they’re just rude, snarky comments. So, it comes across as just unpleasant harping.
Also, the man on the makeover team has the worst hair on television and is so consistently poorly dressed that all you can wonder is why anyone would take any advice from someone with such awful taste. Physician, heal thyself.
And the hostess? (Not the other designer, but the one who does the pre-interviews with family and friends?) Her hair is a disaster.
Anyway, that said, I too love Thom - even though I did not get his shirt on last night’s show. And Jai actually had something to do! And had a great voice.
Also, there’s an article in this week’s Newsweek about the show, and it says they spend between $2,500 and $10,000 on each makeover, depending on how much they feel the guy in question can realistically spend to maintain the changes.
wntw does men as well as women. there is murmurings of a straight gal make over but not for a while.
on wntw the mo is truely a victim. they are ambushed. on qeftsg the mo applies to the show, not a true victim. the mo knows they are going on the show and can deal with it better.
wntw has a marine boot camp mentality. pile insult and injury on the mo and when they are a whimpering little puddle on the floor, give them thier orders and the mo will “hop to.”
qeftsg has a we’re in this together and if we act as a team you are gonna shine mentality. gently poke and kid, show the mo how much fun they can have, how the people in thier lives respond positivly, and the mo will “hop to.”
i much prefer the qeftsg way. i think vincent really wasn’t quite ready for all five to be “in mass.” perhaps the cameras and wildness that goes with all five being together intimidated him. he seemed to warm up to them when there was one or two to interact with.
i find it interesting how the guys seem to enjoy the spa scene. i don’t think i could feel comfortable in one. poor adam had stuff schmered all over his naked body! and had to shuffle about in a foil wrap. i’d have to tell kyan, “sorry i can’t handle the spa scene, perhaps just a whirlpool?”
While I don’t think there’s a queer in America who wouldn’t lick napalm off of Kyan, Ted is the one who’s growing on me the most. I don’t want to see him nekkid, but he seems the most mature and the nicest and the most intelligent. I understand he’s been involved for quite a few years with his boyfriend- are the others single?
Carson is the funniest, of course, but by far the one that I’d LEAST like to go on a road trip with. Did you notice how robotic Kyan’s dancing was, incidentally? (Incidentally, he inverted his name; his “real” name is Doug Kyan.) Beautiful tummy shot of Kyan in this week’s Entertainment Weekly for those interested (and a bikini shot of Jai- very cute and seemingly sweet guy, but a bit too skinny for my taste, which is the main reason I haven’t returned his phone calls).
Did anybody notice last night that Ted grabbed a big ol’ hand of Jai booty as he was leaving last night? I loved the Cleftones exit, btw.
My favorite lines:
Carson: “Hmmm… where can I get me some of those gays?”
Carson: “Billy Dee Williams is aging really well.”
