Martin Gore is as gay as the day is long, dude.
This far into the thread and noone has mentioned Pansy Division? Come on, song titles like:
- Smells like queer spirit
- Cowboys are frequently fond of each other
- Femme in a black leather jacket
- F*** Buddy
Nah ah!!..I thought he was married…wasn’t he?..or was that Dave? I know one of em has a kid…i’m gona have to do some research…
Ah Ah!!!..i knew i was right…Martin gore is as straight as an arrow…this is taken from http://www.martingore.net
**“This album was partly recorded in Paris. There, after breaking off with Christina, Martin meets an American, Suzanne Boisvert, who will become his wife.”
** So he is…just a sissy…
Didn’t Etheridge say she wrote her songs like that on purpose, because she wanted them to be for everybody, not just gay or lesbians?
Getting married is now evidence for heterosexuality?
Marriage of convenience.
“Fag Hag.”
All sorts of possibilities.
Time for me to do a little research…
One member of Depeche Mode is gay, but it’s not me."
Martin Gore
POPCORN (German Pop magazine)
Do we really believe him, folks?
How bout another?
Of course he doesn’t mind people thinking what they like…cause he’s gay!
Come out of the closet already, Martin. We’ll love you anyway.
“Can You Forgive Her”, “Homosexuality”, “You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You’re Drunk” - gay love/sex songs.
And of course, there’s Pansy Division.
If it were 2002, we could add “Living La Vida Loca”
But that would be unfair outing today!
Well, maybe Never Let Me Down Again is about how the singer got talked into taking an acid trip, and his friend is going to be the sober watcher who keeps him from freaking out…
Oh well, I tried.
Bi is a silly little song from living color’s Stain album.
Don’t leave me this way - The Communards
Yes, I know it was originally Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes but it got kind of hijacked.
There was something by George Micheal but the name escapes me.
You guys are missing some obvious ones.
There are several David Bowie songs that fit this catagory…“Boys” and probably “Rebel Rebel” from DIAMOND DOGS, “Lady Stardust” from ZIGGY STARDUST, and many more.
I’m sure that most Freddy Mercury love songs from Queen are probably in this catagory as well.
How about “Jailhouse Rock”, written by Leiber-Stroller and recorded by Elvis? If you look real closely, it has what OZ fans would call a “Beecher-Keller” quality.
“You Got to Hide Your love Away” isn’t technically a gay love song, but many people believe that the choursas is a sympathetic nod to Brian Epstein.
Maeglin, he’s not gay. None of them are, as far as I know. If they were, why would they hide it? For god’s sake, they were synthpop stars in the early 80’s!
The closest you’re going to get is Andy Bell, who is in Erasure with Vince Clarke who was in Depeche Mode briefly at the beginning (and who incidentally wrote their best songs and most of their best album, IMHO).
Oh, and here’s the full quote, which was edited for titillation by Popcorn magazine:
“Everyone thinks I’m gay because of what I wear but it’s not me! There’s only one member of Depeche Mode that’s gay … and we all know who it is!” With this he points an accusing finger at Andy, who’s experiencing a reddening of the cheek and sliding sheepishly down his seat, and is not entirely sure what’s going on.
It’s pretty obvious to me that’s he taking the piss.
Never Let Me Down Again is homoerotic? Y’all need to get out more. No pun intended.

So far, you’ve all missed Pete Townshend - Rough Boys

As long as we’re on Pete Townsend, I nominate “And I Moved” off the Empty Glass album.
I guess this one is more along the lines of “Non-Gender-Specific Prounoun Love Songs”, but David Bowie’s “Wild Is The Wind” is up there. I heard he sang it to Brian Eno.
How about “Kiss Me”, by Sixpence None the Richer? IIRC, MTV had an interview recently with the lead singer, where she says it is about two girls…
Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins- I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because everyone is naming eighties songs. But whenever I listen to it, I’ve always thought it was from one guy, directed to another one. I just can’t imagine it being sung to a woman.

“There She Goes” has always seemed quite queer-centered to me, also. Kind of interesting, considering that at least one member of the band is born-again*.
*[sup]I know “born-again” doesn’t necessarily mean “homophobic”, but that is the way it tends to run.[/sup]

In this vein, even though it’s consistently been sung as a teen-age straight puppy-love type of thing, “I Think We’re Alone Now” has always been stuck in my queer mind as being extremely appropriate as a teen-age gay puppy-love type of thing as well.

<ahem> Ok how about ** Strange Love? ** and ** Master and Servant? ** (from the same album, lyrics here) Master and Servant isn’t homoerotic per se, but the comination of the two on the same album seems to point to something.
