Queer Love Songs

I’m not speaking of just any songs here. I’m talking about that very well defined delicate genre. Songs about boinking members of the same sex. There’s some good one’s out there. Many of them are from bands that could loosely be defined as heterosexual. So what are your favorite queer songs.

Two I can think of off the top of my head.
Hey Sailor! - Murder City Devils a great song, about an attractive sailor drinking cheap wine. Something about Moody’s voice always does it for me. Great stuff
Cowboy Love - Reverend Horton Heat somewhat silly, but entertaining nonetheless.

I think Sophie B. Hawkins’s song, “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” had lesbian overtones.

See if you can track down songs from Blueboy’s “Unisex” CD on Napster. Or try “So Said Kay” or “This Love Is Not Wrong” by the Field Mice.

Hmm…this is a toughy, but the only one that comes to mind is Coil-Slur. Sure it may not be too obvious, but there are definetly some very powerfull homo-erotic undertones. Or maybe that my keen homophobia actin up…who knows.

Well, Coil are gay mages, so homoerotic undertones would be expected.

“Eat Me Alive” by Judas Priest

“Walk on the Wild Side” by Lou Reed.

One of my favorite subjects…

REM - Be Mine

Rufus Wainwright - Danny Boy

Jane Siberry - Maria

Huffamoose - Buy You A Ring
My favorite, but needs explanation. An all-guy band, with songs like “James”, dedicated to a free spirit kinda guy the singer is obviously in love with. The version of “Buy You a Ring” on their second album, after the publicity guys started explaining “James” as having been written from a woman’s point of view, excluded the verse:

Use a condom and light another cigarette
Protect yourself while you’re killing me
and smoking us all to death

Which I think pretty much proves it. But anyway, it’s a beautiful song.

Lets not forget the songs of Morrissey and the Smiths

Shoot, pretty much anything by Depeche Mode. I can’t remember the title of one particularly explicit one, but the lyrics go as follows:

I’m taking a ride with my best friend…

He promises me I’ll be as safe as houses,
As long as I remember who’s wearing the trousers…

Plenty of other queer/submission stuff going on in there.

“Caroline” by Concrete Blonde. I have met peopel willign to swear up and down that it is about a platonic friendship but I think that Occam’s razor pretty much decides in favor of a lesbian love song.

I kissed a Girl, Jill Sobule.

What a kickass video, too, with Fabio and the little pink cartoony houses and stuff. It’s so cute!

Hey, one of my all-time favourite songs!

But… nope. According to an interview with Johnette Napolitano I once read (how’s that for a cite?), the song is about a friend of hers who was an ageing stripper in a fairly seedy club. Johnette just felt sad for her and wondered where her life was going. If you’ve ever seen the (beautiful) video for the song, you’ve seen the whole story - it’s based it fairly closely on Johnette’s experience.
Favourte queer love song? How can you go past Lola by The Kinks?

How about “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell?

It seems to ba about a man struggling with his homosexuality, attracted to another man, but not ready to admit it.

“I’m sorry, I don’t pray that way”

NOOO!!! The Smiths and Depeche Mode can’t have gay undertones in their songs…they just can’t…world fallin apart :(. But seriously…is Morrisey gay? I kinda had an inclining, but just thought he was overly sensitive and a bit dramatic. Oh…and Never Let Me Down could be concived as having homo-erotic subject matter…i mean…common “…as long as you remember who’s wearin the trousers…”. But i’m not sure about their other songs…most of their songs have a general erotic/masochistic/sadisitc feel to em…i would never venture to say that they were homo-erotic. They’re straight…but they’re sissies…

Doesn’t just about every Melissa Etheridge song qualify? I mean, she goes out of her way to write songs without third-person pronouns; it’s never “I love him” or “I love her” but “I love you”. Kinda her way of writing a lesbian love song without offending the masses.

That’s “Never Let Me Down Again” from the Music For The Masses CD.

And who can go past “Two Nice Girls” for songs that don’t beat around the bush?

The Queer Song:
“I’m-a tell you how it’s gonna be
Soon you’re gonna be fucking me
I’ll-a tell you what your mumma will say
I’m ashamed my daughter is gay”…

and…
I Spent My Last Ten Dollars (On Birth Control and Beer):
“I spent my last ten dollars
On birth control and beer
My life was so much simpler
When I was sober and queer”

Not exactly a love song… but kinda cool nonetheless.

Maxxxie

I saw an interview with him where he claimed to asexual, neither gay nor straight.

Big Gay Heart by the Lemonheads
Russian Hill by Jellyfish
