Seriously, what is the gayest song of the 90’s? If you can’t think of that, then tell me what is the gayest song you know?
What Is Love? by Haddaway. Otherwise known as the Night at the Roxy theme.
The gayest song I know is probably the Village People’s “YMCA”. Coming a close second is probably “We Are Family”, by Sister Sledge, which, while not obstensibly gay themed, has sort of been co-opted into a gay song. Disco in general seems to be associated in a lot of people’s minds with homosexuality. It’s possible that’s just because disco happened to be thriving during the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, when gays were becoming more and more visable, but that’s just a guess of mine.
I’ve also heard an album of Christmas carols with the lyrics altered to be gay themed, but I don’t think I’d count that one, because it’s more of a parody than an original collection.
“The Ballad of the Green Berets.”, yeah, yeah I know it’s not from the 90’s, and maybe it’s not even particularly gay, but so what? It’s a song, and who are we to judge if one song is more “gay” than other because of the time period it was created in, or the color of it’s lyrical parachute. I say let all songs be gay, or not, according to their predispostions. I’d also like to nominate the Smith’s “How soon is now” just because it’s also a great song, and even if it’s not “gay” it’s good enough to be gay enough (if it wanted to). Oh… and Tom Wait’s “Cemetery Polka” it’s great!
How 'bout Roddy Bottum’s ode to giving head, “Be Aggressive” on Faith No More’s Angel Dust album. It’s such a great song, you don’t even have to be gay to enjoy it!
I’d say anything by Trent Reznor, but he sucks, and I don’t mean in that special way
Define gay. This is a poorly worded question, if you don’t mind my saying so. (And if you do… too bad).
Mainstream? Probably I Kissed A Girl or Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover.
Non-mainstream and you’d have to look at Pansy Division or Romanovsky & Phillips or someone else off the RADAR screen. Lots of “gay” music that didn’t exactly get airplay.
Not particularly gay? It’s a song about a man who loves hanging out with other macho men and wearing colorful French hats with silver jewelry! He’s out and proud, and he hopes his son will grow up the same way.
Mango’s theme, “I Miss You” by Everything But the Girl.
Well, all of Culture Club’s songs about love were about Boy George’s relationship with Jon Moss, his fellow bandmate…
Right band, wrong title.
Missing by everything but the girl(They have an e.e. cummings fetish).
Gonna have to go with “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred.
I think people are familiar enough with the concept of gay to not require a definition before offering their opinion. What exactly is so confusing about it? Everyone else seems to have understood it.
I always kind of thought that song “Glycerine” sounded gay, but I don’t know for sure since I’ve never cared enough to look up the lyrics.
I had a friend who thought “Flies in the Vaseline” (I hope that’s the title, it’s the chorus, anyway) was gay, but I think he was just projecting.
*Free * by Ulra Nate
For some people, gay=stupid.
I’d go with “Ram it Down” or “Eat Me Alive” by Judas Priest.
I mean, think about it.
“Hit that Perfect Beat” by Bronski Beat comes to mind.
Electric Six’s Gay Bar would be a possibility :

I wanna take you to a gay bar,
I wanna take you to a gay bar,

Slide By the Goo Goo Dolls. Maybe Iris (ibid)
My all time favorite, It’s Raining Men. It must be played loudly when it comes on the radio.
Yes, the op did say 90’s, but YMCA was mentioned too…
