In 1978, Mitch Ryder (yes, that Mitch Ryder) recorded an entire album about having sex with other men, called How I Spent My Vacaction, with songs titles like “Cherry Poppin’,” “Passion Well,” “Tough Kid,” “Nice & Easy,” and “The Jon.” The lyrics are pretty explicit and leave very little doubt: apparently Mitch likes anal sex with very young men. For anyone with further doubts, I once read an interview with Ryder, in 1982 when his Never Kick a Sleeping Dog (with it’s cover of Prince’s “When You Were Mine”) came out, in which, no matter how hard the interviewer tried to keep him on track discussing the new album, all Mitch wanted to talk about was the sexual subtext of How I Spent My Vacation.
For a long time it was impossible to buy in the U.S.; I bought mine in London.
<minor newbie hijack>
“Raspberry Swirl” definetly has a lesbian subtext, but I feel like I should expand on it a little bit…
Tori said in an interview that this song is about (I believe I have the right name) her best friend Beenie, and how Tori almost wished she could be a lesbian, to provide Beenie with that kind of love.
So, it’s a lesbian love song about, of all things…not being a lesbian.
How about the Village People’s YMCA. A discussion of this song came up when VH1 was doing a countdown of the top 100 dance songs of all time. And as stated by a few artists commenting on the song, the YMCA as always been know as a place to “meet” men. And to paraphrase a line from the song, they say something like – you’ll have fun with all the boys.
Rod Stewart had a pretty good song out in the 70’s about a young gay man (forgot the name).
I may have inadvertantly missed this one, but I don’t think so.
Lola by The Kinks.
That was the first song that popped into my head! Goes to show my age, too…
Sir Elton had lots of gay love songs. In fact, from an interview I read a while back, ALL his love songs are. The one that came readiest to mind was Someone Saved My Life Tonight and it was written about Bernie Taub, who literally saved him from committing suicide at one point in his life. IIRC, Your Song was also written for him, as well.
Is it strange that many of the songs blared over the loudspeakers at pro sporting events, esp. the NFL, to encite the team and fans to a testosterone rush are by openly gay groups: “We Will Rock You” “We Are the Champions” by Queen are 2 that come immediately to mind. There are others (an instrmental by Sweet?), but I can’t think of them now.
Do you think the Joe Sixpack fan in the stands knows?
Actually, Bernie Taupin writes all of Elton John’s lyrics, so I don’t think Elton has actually written any songs for Bernie (I mean…yeah, he wrote the SONG, but not the words, where the message of the song lies…you know what I mean). Although it’s possible it was the other way around, or that Bernie wrote songs from Elton’s point of view, etc.
And all of the love songs he sings become gay love songs because he is gay, don’t they? I mean, a song doesn’t always have to be specifically gay or straight…if a gay man sings it, that can make it gay.
And watch out for “queer love songs” that are simply examples of the singer singing from the pov of someone of the opposite sex. Remember White Town, “Your Woman,” where the guy sings from the pov of a woman who has been knocked up by a sleazy guy?
