Queer science fiction geeks unite!

Shall we bestow upon Poly the title of Honorary Queer Geek?

Works for me.

Esprix

I’m honored! (Wonder what people would think of my using that as a .sig?)

Is this the same Joe Phillips who does the cartoons of the guys with lowslung jeans with their butts showing in various media (e.g., XY)?

DAMN!! I’m going to be playing Broadcaster Geek that week in Las Vegas a the National Association of Broadcasters Convention.

Same kind of geeks, same kind of seminars and panels, I’d venture to say the same number of Queer people (I mean the convetion DOES attract about 125,000 people from around the world - the odds are pretty good, right?) just a lot fewer costumes and Spock “Live-Long-And-Prosper” hand gestures - oh wait, that leaves out the Ham Radio Operators reception on Wednesday … and probably the WB network breakfast meeting.

I’ll be so close and yet so far away. :frowning:

Have fun folks, it sounds like a blast.

Sorry we’ll miss you, TV.

And yes, Poly, Joe’s work is very popular among the XY Magazine set. You can see his site at http://www.joephillips.com.

I wish I could get myself to the USA so I could go to this!

Anyone interested in the queer subtext of the work of Orson Scott Card?

phraser, did you think we haven’t already discussed that at several G’cons?

Esprix

See, i live in that far away little country on the other side of the world…

AFAIK I’m the only queer Orson Scott Card fan in the nation LOL

Isn’t he the one that used to be really homophobic, but has chilled out over the years?

Esprix

Esprix, Polycarp suggested I check this thread out. Since I’m the piano player the musical* for Confluence, the Pittsburgh science fiction convention, I’ll be happy to see if I can get you a mention there. I’ll also be happy to pass word along to the Hell’s Mensans and I might even be able to get some fliers put out at various Regional Gatherings (RG’s, the O and the Y are omitted when spelling).

I want you to know that I think you’re completely insane for doing this, but I’m glad someone is.

Good luck!
CJ

I’m completely insane, period. Thanks for the offers for help!

Ah, here it is, with a link to a (bad) representation of it:

Per fess azure and argent, a cow statant argent marked sable and a feather fesswise reversed azure

Remember, this is SCA heraldry, which isn’t entirely historically accurate.

Esprix

A noble blazon, to be sure. I’m working on a (non-SCA, just in case I ever happen to be in a position to matriculate) coat for myself: *Argent, on a pile purpure an angel proper displayed, winged of the field, crined gules and robed (either vert or Or), holding in the sinister hand a man’s heart of the third, which he defends with a sword fesswise held in the dexter hand, proper; between to dexter scales of justice and to sinister a cornucopia both Or. *

Very nice, Matt! I like the symbolism. Is any part of that taken from the McLaughlin (under any of the spellings) arms?

Small problem: are the scales and cornucopia supposed to be on the pile with the angel, or on the field? If the latter (which I’d assume), you’re free to deviate from the traditional name-the-ordinary-first by saying “Argent, between scales of justice dexter and cornucopia sinister both Or, on a pile purpure an angel proper displayed…” (That old economy-of-blazon thing.)

Mine is:

Argent, on a pile engrailed sable a boar courant to sinister of the first. Motto: En ma fin est ma commencement.

Eek! Talking about your pile (no double entendre intended) made me misblazon – that’s …on a fess engrailed…

This is truly a geeky thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sounds like the headline from a particularly nasty transporter accident.

“What we got back didn’t live long, but it had sex with itself for about 45 minutes.”

If you give me some flyers(or something), I’ll see about spreading the word of your con around to some anime cons, including Yaoi-con.

not to mention the law of tincture!! I swear to God, I meant scales and a cornucopia gules! Gules!

Well, I haven’t found any armigerous ancestors, so I don’t know if there are any arms I could inherit. However, in the crest I put together, which I didn’t quote (ftr, it’s mantled argent and purpure, a castle triple-towered and surmounted by a rainbow both proper), the castle is from a MacLachlan clan badge that our particular branch thereof has been using.

Interesting! Is it matriculated? Is it descended from an ancestor or is it your own creation?

Nope – it’s the arms of my family (which would legally belong to a second or third cousin I’ve never met, heir of a half-great-uncle who moved here 80 years before I did) – modified to avoid infringing on his arms – colors are reversed from the family arms, the engrailing is my addition, and the boar is courant to dexter in the family arms. (Not that I see things in black and white, mind! ;))
