My unranked list would probably include these at least:
The Handmaiden
Men
Mad Max Fury Road
Oldboy
I Saw The Devil
The Nightingale
Silence
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Inception
Hereditary
Paprika
Lord of War
In Bruges
The Greatest Showman
The Blackcoat’s Daughter
Ooh, yes, very hard to choose a Miyazaki, but from the past 25 years, this is it.
Have you seen Paprika from Satoshi Kon?
I have not, but it’s on my (to-watch) list now!
Maybe my favorite movie poster of all time. (uh, click the link)
Even clicking gives a bad link, but from the file name I assume you mean the Satoshi Kon movie?
I’m terrible at making lists of favorite things, and also apparently terrible at seeing movies. I have only seen 5 off of Tarantino’s lists. Looking at other “best of” lists online, I haven’t seen the majority of them.
Trying to think about it I’m suprised at how many of my legitimate top choices are Asian, and how little is coming to mind of Western films that I enjoy rewatching as often. All of these favorites I’ve watched at the least 3 times each.
Spirited Away
Tokyo Godfathers
The Host
Summer Time Machine Blues
One Cut of the Dead
Swing Girls
Night Time Picnic
Here is, in alphabetical order, my top 17. After that the films become too hard to rank.
- About Schmidt (2002)
- Adaptation. (2002)
- Bowling for Columbine (2002)
- Her (2013)
- The Incredibles (2004)
- Interstellar (2014)
- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
- The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
- Memento (2001)
- Phantom Thread (2017)
- The Pianist (2002)
- Poor Things (2023)
- Precious (2009)
- The Prestige (2006)
- There Will Be Blood (2007)
Looks like Tarantino and I agree only on There Will Be Blood. (I do like plenty of the other films in his list, but wouldn’t put them in my top 20.)
Children of Men and No Country for Old Men
I’m too annoyed by Tarantino’s inclusion of The Devil’s Rejects. What an idiotic waste of celluloid. Ahh, that’s better:
Almost Famous
In Bruges
Interstellar
No Country For Old Men
Everyting Everywhere All At Once
Arrival
The Departed
Memento
Oppenheimer
Behind Enemy Lines
Mystic River
The Bourne Ultimatum
Saltburn
The Martian
Cast Away
The Prestige
There Will Be Blood
Shaun Of The Dead
The Banshees Of Inisherin
The Matrix Reloaded
My top 20, after about 30 minutes of consideration:
- Memento
- Amélie
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Kung Fu Hustle
- No Country for Old Men
- A Separation
- Get Out
- The Grand Budapest Hotel
- Moonlight
- Manchester by the Sea
- Roma
- Shoplifters
- Anora
- It Was Just an Accident
- City of God
- Let the Right One in
- The Lives of Others
- Little Miss Sunshine
- Inside Out
- Sideways
Here is the image I meant it to show.
Couldn’t narrow it down more than top 30… in no particular order…
The Incredibles
Apollo 11
Hot Fuzz
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
The Father
Ex-Machina
Prisoners
The Prestige
1917
Lion
They Shall Not Grow Old
The Invisible Guest
Casino Royale
Toy Story 3
In Bruges
Zodiac
Brokeback Mountain
Inception
Finding Neverland
The Dark Knight
Wall-E
Gladiator
No Country For Old Men
Master and Commander
Minority Report
LOTR (all 3)
Ratatouille
The Bourne Ultimatum
I should have included Ex Machina in my list. If I have to keep it down to 20, I’d replace Inside Out.
Almost Famous
Amelie
Master and Commander
Inside Out
Mad Max Fury Road (mostly because those were REAL vehicles, not CGI!)
