Question about a mod note

It is right there in the OP: “Provided you are open to an open casket funeral and manglization of your body is somewhat repairable, what do you want to wear to your own funeral?”

And my answer to that question, which I don’t think should be dismissed, is that it doesn’t matter to me.

mmm

Well, you do usually include a “none of the above” option in your polls, so you are consistent.

What puzzles me about accusations of thread shitting is that the accuser has to actively ascribe some ill will to the purported shitter.

I imagine them in a real life group conversation where someone asks, “What would you like to wear to your own funeral?” and a response of, “I don’t care,” draws forth criticism of the answer. Would seem very petty to me and often strikes me the same way on this board.

Unlike a real conversation, no response is needed here.

So, I am not allowed to answer the question posed?

mmm

And this question

…has not been answered.

mmm

You’re not required to participate in the conversation, unlike when among a group of people engaged in a group discussion.

I don’t think “thread shit” has anything to do with intent. I think it’s about content. So yes, if you misread an op and answer off topic, that’s off topic, even if that wasn’t your intent. Same with a thread shit.

IMHO, FWIW, it wasn’t even a misunderstanding. Asking about a preference and replying “it makes no difference to me” is, arguably at least, a perfectly valid response. But (again, IMHO) it is decidedly not a thread shit. A thread shit should normally be something that disparages the topic of the thread or otherwise introduces negativity, especially in a hostile way and/or wildly off topic. In the thread in question, for instance, replying that “funerals are the stupidest ritual ever invented by mankind” could legimitely be regarded as a thread shit. The mod note in this instance in my opinion was a poor judgment call.

Most group discussions don’t require every person to answer every question posed, either.

That’s true as well though it can seem odd if you’re not participating in the flow of conversation at all.

His answer did both of those. He rather strongly implied that it’s stupid to care how your body is displayed. I think that’s why none of the other replies that could be interpreted as not caring very much were reported.

Neither of these questions have been answered. Why did Mr Mustard get a note and I didn’t when we essentially said the same thing?

Exactly this.

I admit it was a little hyperbolic, but it didn’t include or imply anything about other posters. The context was explicitly limited to himself.

I don’t want to go too far down a rabbit-hole on this as it was only a mod note, but to my reading the response was just saying, by way of a rather flowery analogy, that it makes no difference to the poster what he wears. Reading something disparaging into that response, like “everyone who feels otherwise is stupid” is, in my view, a very uncharitable interpretation and really quite a stretch.

It was only a mod note. I responded to a report of the post, someone was offended.

Of course, i ignore about half the reports i handle. (Except the system reports about potential spam. Those are almost always right.) But i thought this complaint was reasonable.

ISTM this could have been stated early on and would have removed a lot of the speculation about the reasoning behind it. I was under the impression that the whole thing started as a Mod decision.

Not really-sometimes all it takes is a need to participate, whether your participation is appropriate or not.

I did no such thing. And I believe no such thing. I merely answered the question posed.

OP: What do you want to wear at your funeral?
Me: I don’t care.
Mod: If you don’t care, don’t speak.

I didn’t imply that it is stupid, you inferred that I meant it is stupid, and that’s what got me the note.
