Question about creatures in Quest for Fire

I was watching the 1981 film Quest for Fire last night and in the beginning, the main characters’ tribe is attacked by ape-like creatures of great strength (although before the age of computer animation, the creatures looked like something out of a bigfoot hoax film). Is this accurate? If so, what species were these supposed to be? I was under the impression that the filmmakers took great pains to make the film as authentic as possible. The film is supposed to take place 80,000 years ago.

According to thewikithey are homo erectus. The authencity has to do with keeping in line with a very old book, not based on the limited actual knowledge of human life in those times.
