Question about Goodbye Lenin (spoilers possible)

Hoping somebody else out there saw this and can answer. Just saw this from Netflix, and I have one question: why did Alex have Lara wrap him up in the plaster cast? Did I miss a couple of subtitles? I thought he said something like, “I hope this works”, and then they got sidetracked into arguing, so I didn’t really “get” what the point of the plaster cast was.

I thought that it wasthat his girlfriend was a nurse in training, so he was helping her practice her castmaking skills.

I guess that makes sense. But they could’ve explained it a bit more clearly for us old fogies who are slow on the uptake.
