Hurricanes were once named for the place they made landfall such as the 1900 Galveston hurricane.
What if a hurricane made multiple landfalls? Hurricane Irma recently made landfall on Barbuda, Sint Maarten, Cuba, and Florida. Katrina and Andrew, among others, hit both Florida and Louisiana. How would these storms have been named in the days of naming storms for the place they hit?
In those days, the names were in no sense official. They were all informal and only significant storms were named. So if a storm was significant in two different places, it would get two names, each used in a different geographic area.
