Question about property / local taxes

I’ve heard that NYC is aggressive in taxing people who claim to not live there.

Taxes affect people’s movement to some extent - but it’s not even just the difference between income taxes and property taxes. For example, I am retired and receive a pension from my former employer. I would like to move closer to my daughter who lives in an adjacent state. But I will pay more in taxes if I move to that state - in part because unlike my city, the localities in that state depend on property tax. But also because my pension is not taxed in my state, but would be in my daughter’s

My limited experience involved considering moving to Valparaiso, IN, after a lifetime in the Chicago, IL area. Actually put bids in on 3 houses, which failed inspections. Common wisdom is that taxes are much lower in IN. Well, yes, and no. In IN we had additional county taxes, which we lacked in IL. Plus services were much lower - including building quality with less stringent building codes/enforcement. And car/home insurance was considerably higher.

So, for us whatever relatively modest savings there might have been would have been outweighed by the dubious pleasure of living in NW IN.

Taxes where I live are relatively high - tho I can afford them. As can anyone who - if their income is less - chooses to allocate their money in that direction. I prefer living somewhere that the populace values quality public schools and libraries… And I personally favor the provision of public services, as opposed to private funding within gated communities, private schools, and high user fees.
