Is there any reason given why the wedding is Indian “themed”? Clearly they had a diverse group of friends but it seemed the only Indian person was the girl who held Rachel’s train.
Now, I totally understand wearing saris for how gorgeous they are, and the groom was probably comfortable in his garb. But the blue elephant cake? Isn’t that taking it a bit far when you aren’t Indian and don’t have a real cultural basis for this? I know it was never remarked on, and taken as given, but all I could think was a Connecticut liberal family being multiculti just for the sake of it.
Finally, am I an asshole for being bothered by this?
“Connecticut liberal family being multiculti just for the sake of it” just about covers it, with the added “they’re characters in a Jonathan Demme film” factor.
It didn’t bother me, only because I’m pretty familiar with the idea that modern couples mix and match whatever aesthetics they want (and can afford) for their wedding. I suspect that Rachel thought the Indian theme was cool, Sydney was fine with it, and there you go.
I think one of the movie’s weak spots was that the family was SO precious and multicultural and talented and everything. It didn’t seem real. It seemed like an idealized cutesy indie film family, at least on that level.
I agree–I liked how authentic all the dialogue was, and I respect wanting the music you love around, but lay off a tad.
I’m not as familiar with all of Demme’s indie-type stuff (I love Silence of the Lambs and Stop Making Sense of course) but based on this one, I’d prefer John Sayles.
I loved–“Well I didn’t think you would kill him!” and that blowup between Kym and her mother. So intense.
My favorite part of the movie and got a laugh out loud reaction, was when Kim asked if the musicans had to play all weekend or some such and the dad asked the to cut it out.
I mean who has a band over at their house the weekend of a weeding to play background music, of the same type over and over again?
I also thought the whole we are having an ethnic themed wedding for the purpose of having an ethnic themed wedding.
