Question About Root Canal

Hi,

I had a root canal done about 5 days ago. Today I went and they placed a temp crown. I had it done about 2 hours ago and my tooth, jaw and neck hurts now. My dentist said " I am going to remove a bit of the inflamed tissue around the tooth." What does this mean? Did he scrape off some gum tissue? Also it looks like I can see some cement coming out of my gums? Is this normal?

Thanks

No. Put your affairs in order.

hows it not normal? Oh btw the could not find my old root canal thread. Its gone.

Look harder.

Also, get a sense of humor. You’re being whooshed.

You just had minor surgery after essentially neglecting your teeth for over a year, and you expect to be back to normal after a couple days? Get your head out of your ass.

Dont be mean. Im just living life. I was too broke to get them fixed right away. I am chasing a dream and it’s hard to get by right now.

Hmmm, better go back to your other thread in Great Antibob’s link until this one gets forum-changed out of the BBQ Pit, then.

Here in the Pit, we live to be mean.

The inflammation sounds normal, so does the neck and jaw stiffness (especially as you were dreading the procedure - you were probably extra tense). As for the cement or whatever it is you see, that’s probably a question for the dentist/endodontist that did the work. Did you get painkillers or anti-inflammatories to take? Good ol’ Advil or Tylenol should help a lot.

What you describe as cement may be the top surface of a wound as it heals (ie a scab). Stop poking it.

You can have drainage from the infection around the root of the tooth. Swish your mouth with warm salt water, and take Tylenol.

Idunno. I’m not a doctor or nothing, but it sounds like you might have developed some sort of auto-immune condition. Or at least made one worse.

Then again, could be lupus, too.

It’s never lupus.

To the OP: it’s normal. You’re swollen and stiff because 1) you had significant dental work done that 2) required you to hold your jaw open and at an unusual angle for a long period of time and 3) you were tense about it. My endo/dentist always recommended 1 tylenol + 1 advil taken together to help with pain & swelling.

I’m not sure what the cement is - I don’t recall that from any of mine, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, just that I don’t remember.

I’ve had that done a couple of times when I got crowns. My dentist (who I do like and trust - I do think you should find one you trust) uses an electrosurgery gizmo. Sorry, I can’t describe it very well because I haven’t had a good look at it, but it’s a small wand that didn’t look very scary; it cuts and cauterizes simultaneously. She cut back my gums to provide more tooth surface area to attach the crowns. No problems whatsoever other than the usual discomfort from having my mouth screwed around with.

I have had a lot of dental work done (I’ve always been rather negligent about oral care - yes I know that’s bad  ). I’ve had numerous fillings, several crowns, and (I think) three root canals. Negligent about care I may be, but I DO get problems looked at as soon as I have any discomfort. And, no, I have no autoimmune diseases!
Not even lupus

If you keep on starting new threads about this, maybe the answer will change to the one you want.

Or he can get banned along the way.

The temp crown is cemented in place and it’s not unusual to have a little bit of residue not get cleaned away completely. If it’s more than a few specks, you could contact the dentist.

I swallowed one of my temp crowns. Be grateful that they used so much cement that it’s seeping out. [kinda wish there was a smiley with a missing tooth]

I took care of that for you (new app: ‘SharpieOnMonitor’, $1.29, iOS and Android, available at acehardware.com). Hey, and if you scroll just right, it also changes random periods into colons.

were you also too broke to take care of them? A toothbrush, toothpaste and floss are cheap and not eating sugar is free.
