Question about the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

My wife doesn’t mind graphic violence, but she does mind what she calls “Jump-Out Scary” movies. In other words, movies with a lot of scenes which attempt to frighten through surprise. It works on her every time, she shrieks, she’s embarrassed, and a bad time is had by her…

I hear the film named in the title is good and smart, but I don’t know much about it. Is it “jump-out-scary”?

There are no spring loaded cats, but there are two or three scenes of the lead characters being tortured or abused. Difficult to watch but relevant to the plot.

Most of the movie is a detective story.

Edited: I should have mentioned I thought was a great movie, I hope the other two are released in America soon. I read the book last week and enjoyed it as well. I was impressed with the adaption. Normally I don’t care for the changes made to a book in making a movie, but they did a very good job. The plot was rearranged slightly to make it work better in the context of a movie but in a way that stayed true to the book. And a few things I found better, which is rare.

Just came back from it at the Sunshine Theater on Houston Street. I’m glad I was able to escape to the Whole Foods Market and have a sandwich amid happy people and smiling kids. Even though the movie has a “happy ending”, it really grabs you.

There is one scene where shots are fired unexpectedly at someone, and two or three where people are punched out of nowhere. It’s not exactly a BOO! sort of movie that relies on that sort of thing, but the scenes are there.

Terrific movie although it makes KILL BILL look like BABIES sometimes. Sexual and firey violence, although sometimes it’s deserved. Gorgeous scenery, amazing acting, makeup, and costumes.

Are we talking about the original movie or the American version?

I wasn’t aware the American version was finished. Is it?

We’re all talking about the 2009 Swedish version, released here in March. No, the American version is not finished/released. A lot of the reviews I’ve seen, in fact, mention that the US version is something to be sort of dreaded as it won’t be able to capture the spirit of this one.

Saw it, liked it. As noted there are some hard scenes to watch, but they aren’t gratuitous, mostly necessary for developement, one’s a bit of a ‘yes! that’s what you get, bitch.’ But they’re not pop up scary stuff, more than once or twice.

The movie is a mystery, not a thriller nor a horror. It’s not a movie for children, and it has certainly got more realistic and unsettling violence than probably most horror movies, but it doesn’t rely on gimmicks and people jumping out to scare you, no.

Argh, I really want to see this but it’s playing at my most-hated theater in Chicago. I went to this theater last week to see Micmacs and was reminded yet again why I hate it so much. They charge $11 fucking dollars for the most uncomfortable seats in town, plus they play ads AFTER the start time of the movie. I don’t mind ads BEFORE the movie’s start time, and I don’t mind Previews AFTER the movie’s start time, but ads before previews?? I seethed while writhing in my uncomfortable seat. Luckily Micmacs is so truly wonderful that I was able to walk out in a good mood anyway. I’m hoping that Girl will open at Piper’s Alley.

The American version is in pre-production.

Oh posh and bollocks. It’s being adapted by Steve Zallian, who wrote Searching for Bobby Fischer, Schindler’s List, and Gangs of New York. It’s being directed by David Fincher, who directed Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac. It’s rumored to star Carey Mulligan as Lisbeth, and also rumored is Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Daniel Craig and Viggo Mortensen. Now, I understand that big names/recognizable faces can be a distraction, but that’s a cast I want to see, whatever the project. Maybe it’ll get more people to see the original when they otherwise would never have seen it.

There’s fairly graphic sexual violence that is difficult to watch and a sucker punch or two, but I can’t think of a single jack-in-the-box moment where something pops out suddenly to startle you. It’s more of a psychological thriller that has a few unexpected moments.

There’s going to be an American remake?

How does this only happen to you at one theater? Aside from seeing The A-Team this week and seeing no ads, it’s been years since I’ve been to the theater without seeing a Fandango ad or a Coca-Cola ad or an Army ad as part of the previews after the listed start time.

Everyone knows I go to the theater a LOT. 93 movies so far this year, 13 so far in June alone. All those were seen a 9 different theaters, 8 of them that I regularly go to. The 9th, Landmark Century Centre Cinema, is the culprit. They’re the ONLY theater of all the ones I go to that play ads after the start time of the film. I’ve only seen one movie there so far this year, Micmacs, because I hate them so much. Luckily, most of the movies they play also play elsewhere at the same time or within a couple/few weeks of opening at Landmark, and most of the time I go to those elsewhere theaters. Micmacs was playing elsewhere, but it was a theater way up north and harder to get to. I was too much in a hurry to see Micmacs and held my nose. Now I’m just hoping that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and another one I want to see, Ondine, open elsewhere in the next few weeks.

So anyway, there are tons of theaters in the Chicagoland area I’ve never been to but in my experience for the ones I do go to all the time, showing ads AFTER the listed start time of the movie is never done. Ads before the start time? Sure, as part of the “First Look” pre-movie roll, but at the actual movie start time, previews show.

If a movie’s listed to start at 7:00, there are ads up until 7:00, and at 7:00, previews start. Maybe you are getting ads after the start time, like I do at Landmark, or maybe you’ve never looked at the exact time as to when the ads stopped and when the previews started.

I don’t mind those pre-start time ads btw. They’re easily ignored and they help the revenue of the theater which makes precious little off the ticket price for movies just opening. Theaters make most of their money on concessions, and I never ever ever buy concessions, so I tend to feel guilty. Go ahead, show me some ads. I won’t pay attention and won’t buy anything because of them, but if they help you keep the theater open, fine. Just don’t charge me $11.00, have crappy, uncomfortable seats, and then show me ads after the start time!

[Hypocrite]Unless Landmark started a $5 Wednesdays special or something, then I’d be there every week because I do love a bargain. I rarely used to go to a theater called the Music Box because they have high prices, horrible uncomfortable seats and it’s blocks from trains and buses. They started a $5 Monday special and I go every week now. They don’t show ads after the start time.[/Hypocrite]

Sorry about the wildly off-topic rant.

Landmark is a chain that specializes in showing foreign and independent American films:

I presume the way that they can make a profit while avoiding showing any blockbuster films is to charge higher ticket prices and show more advertisements.

That’s fine, but I’m not going to support them unless I absolutely have to*, or unless they start special deal nights. In general, usually, I’m lucky enough to have choices, though sometimes I have to wait for it. And sure enough…

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is opening Friday at Century Evanston, the theater I should have gone to see Micmacs at. I’m going there after work on Friday to see it, and it’ll even be a matinee price. I’ll also see Toy Story 3 there after Girl. What a double-feature. They’re playing a midnight show of Boogie Nights, which would be great to see again in the theater, but nothing works out time-wise to be a bridge. Too bad Jonah Hex doesn’t work out time-wise. I’ll have to go see that Saturday night after my two Kurosawa films at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

[juvenile]thumbs nose at Landmark[/juvenile]

(Edit to add that I saw the preview for the 2nd film, the sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, when I went to see OSS 117: Lost In Rio at the Music Box last night. Now I’ll be able to see it, having seen the first one. I can’t remember the name of it.)

  • it’s a measure of how much I utterly, completely, besottedly loved The Fall that I saw it 9 times at Landmark. The first time was a free screening, and I paid full price for the next 8 times, including 3 in one night on the last night it played, because I figured I’d never get to see it on the big screen, on film, again. It never opened in any other theater in Chicago.

Saw it yesterday p.m. at my local theater, The Glen - W of Chicago right across from the Metra Station. Only $5, but guaranteed as crappy a film-viewing experience you’ll find anywhere. Uncomfortable seats? Check. Horrible film/sound quality? Check. :stuck_out_tongue:

What a film! Best I’ve seen in a LONG time. Yeah, a couple of these scenes were pretty hard to watch. Thet don’t show much graphically, but what is going on in them is just so disturbing… Rarely do I enjoy a film that long without checking my watch once.

Yeah, saw it a while back, and this is a terrific movie.

I did go see it last night at Century Evanston and was knocked out by it. Yes, a terrific movie. I knew it would be good, and I wasn’t disappointed. A fascinating story, intriguing characters, a chilly setting, a great mystery and resolution…the time flew by and it never seemed like a 2 1/2 hour movie. I will see it again before it leaves.

I’m sure I’ll like the American remake too. There’s nothing about the original that can’t be easily transported and the story is too good to keep hidden. Still, I’m very glad I saw the original, and I’m looking forward to the next two movies.

Edit to add, Carey will make a great Lisbeth, though maybe not quite as hard-edged. And I can see George Clooney as Mikael, though I really really really liked Michael Nyqvist.

Nope. I saw Winter’s Bone again instead because it needs the support more, and I wanted to see it again anyway. Everyone should go see Winter’s Bone, seriously.

I’ll see TS3 tonight, one of 5 movies I’m seeing today/tonight. What fun!

Yeah, but what about the OP.

Frylock, did you see this movie? What did you and your wife think?
