I am going to be an usher in my father-in-law’s wedding, and have been instructed to get measured for a tuxedo. Sounds simple enough.
But my neurotic soon-to-be-mother-in-law is convinced that I cannot get measured just anywhere (like the local K&G), but somewhere where I can get specifically measured for a Perry Ellis tuxedo.
Does that make any sense? Aren’t my measurements going to be the same wherever I go? Or do Perry Ellis tuxedos use a different set of measurements than “normal” tuxes? What’s the scoop here?
It doesn’t make any sense to me. Even if they did use different measurements, you’d think a conversion chart would be enough. It’s not like they’re building radically different clothes. They’ll still need a waist and a hip and a neck and an inseam and a rise and a shoulder and a sleeve measurement.
She’s an idiot. They’re not going to measure you any differently, it’s still in inches, and the people actually renting out the tux know how measurements correspond to size for the designers they carry. Besides, you’ll be trying on the tux before you leave the shop, right? Right?!
I don’t know what K&G is, but any men’s store that actually does alterations on a regular basis can do the job. As long as the person shows the competence to know what you’re talking about without having to ask someone what needs to be measured, or refer to some handbook or something, you should be good to go.
The conversation should go like this: “I need to be measured for a rental tuxedo that is going to be ordered for me.” “Step right over here, sir!” Zip, bam, boom, about five measurements later you should be done. If they hesitate, they are lost.
It is possible to mis-measure someone, but they would be a doofus. The more likely error is failing to take a measurement.
Er, no, I won’t. I’m in Boston, and the tuxes are being rented by the soon-to-be-married couple in D.C. I wasn’t planning to travel that far just to try on a tux!
Some people are going to be better at measuring than others are but it won’t vary by brand and if it did it’s not likely Perry Ellis would do an especially better job than anyone else.
