Best way to estimate the sizes of tuxedo?

I’m planning to offer a tuxedo for sale on craigslist, but I cannot seem to find the jacket or trouser sizes anywhere on them. Also, I cannot remember what size I was 25 years ago when it fit me.

I know how to take my measurements (chest, waist, inseam) and how those measurements relate to the measurements for a jacket and trousers, but I’m wondering what I should take into consideration when translating the actual measurements of the garments.

What I mean is, I don’t expect a jacket that is sized for a 42-inch chest (roughly what I was then) to actually be 42 inches around the chest, as I don’t recall ever owning a skin-tight jacket before. The trouser measurements, perhaps, as those seem truer.

Any help or helpful suggestions welcome. Snarking at my no longer fitting into a 42-inch jacket not so much.

Take the suit to your tailor, who will know how to make the appropriate measurements.
