Question for Apple Geeks

Like many families, we’ve progressed through the Apple product tree from old to new, and have old devices hanging around. This is a good thing.

I have a Bose Soundock Portable that I want to dedicate an old iPhone to.
We also have one that lives in the Yukon.

A problem that I’ve discovered is that one iPhone doesn’t work properly.
When we plug any iPhone or Ipod into the Soundock, they work as expected - that is the remote will select the next or previous song. 7 different devices all work, and one doesn’t. This particular one won’t let the remote advance the song.

The same holds true for the connection system in my GMC Yukon. The steering wheel buttonswill advance or reverse song selection on all but this device.

You’re thinking the OS, right? I dunno. The offending device is an iPhone 3G/A1241 with 4.2.1 loaded. My older original iPhone - model 1203 with 3.1.3 loaded works like a charm.

I can’t find a setting to change that has any effect on this problem.

Even with the world ending soon, I’d still like to figure out a solution.
Please don’t suggest I use one device for the truck ***AND ***the Soundock.

What are you, a monster? I won’t live like that. I just won’t.

Any Apple Geniuses have a livable solution?

Many of those devices use the serial port pins on the Dock connector for remote control functions. Its quite possible those pins on that particular device aren’t making contact or something in the connector is broken.

Seems to be an iOS issue when 4.1/4.2.1 came out.

Here’s a disscussion thread on Apple’s support page about issues with this OS upgrade and Bose’s SoundDock:

And Bose USA’s response:

The rest of that thread is full if frustrated customers, some with luck, some without. It seems one issue might be if your iPhone has a case, as the new firmware might have tweaked the sensitivity of the connection, or some other esoteric reason.

Good luck!
