This is an excellent question and my response was to just nail her all the time. Thanks for recalling these memories.
Dude…
I see now that this is a zombie thread. Still: Dude.
My sister was gorgeous. Not my reaction, but independently verified by, among others, her husband. She’s 11 years younger than me and, believe me, you have no sexual attraction to someone whose diaper you have changed.
When Israel had kibbutzes everyone expected that there would be a lot of marriages between creche-mates. It turned out that such liaisons were exceedingly rare. I guess this is what, upthread, was called the Westermarck effect. So it is not sociological, but biological. The selective advantage is evident.
When we were young my younger sister was apparently considered quite attractive. The hardest part for me was when guys would go on about her to me, sometimes skirting the line of what a brother wants to hear said of his sister. I never got in a fight about it or anything, but I sometimes felt guys were testing my limit of how much I would take.
I never felt any attraction to her. It just never occurred to me.
I have 1 brother and 1 sister. I am a straight female. I however do not find my dad or I brother attractive. Somebody can say someone is sexy and hot without having an actual attraction to that person. They’re just saying that: “Yes, indeed they are beautiful, but I’m not into them because…” being their relative is a pretty good damn reason not to be. You saying that you would bang your sister is highly disgusting and disturbing. Were you not taught norms? Bigger question: ARE YOU AN INBRED? If you had a biological sister that you impregnated, so you realize how messed up the child would be? It would be mentally retarded, deformed, and deprived of life. Wtf are you thinking? That’s your family, KEEP YOUR DICK IN YOUR PANTS!
Hi, Hamilton. Welcome to the Straight Dope. If you’re expecting a response from the original poster, you might note that the previous post to yours was in 2015, and the thread was started in 2003 - in Internet terms, the Jurassic Era. Most likely, the OP is long gone.
In addition, he said he didn’t have a sister, so he had probably never experienced the Westermarck Effect, that creates the incest taboo for those of us with siblings. So “why wouldn’t you be sexually attracted to someone who’s sexually attractive?” didn’t seem like an unreasonable question.
In high school a friend had a sister who was a 10. She looked like a model. But he would always talk about how ugly she was. I guess he wanted us to stay away from her?
I’m still here.
This topic appears to cause a lot of “morally dumbfounded” responses. See more here:
It makes sense that humans would have evolved some psychological mechanism not to be attracted to siblings/parents/offspring they spent significant time with. Might as well ask a father why he doesn’t want to have sex with his daughter or a son: “Why won’t you wanna have sex with your MILF mom?” There’s something more fundamental that short circuits the attraction.
Well, the chances are substantially higher but it’s not a certainty by a long shot. According to studies:
That’s as opposed to a 7% birth defect rate in children of women not impregnated by a first order relative. Not that I’m in any way condoning incest, I’m just submitting the facts.
7% of babies suffer an early death, severe birth defect or mental deficiency? 1/14 is rather more than I expected.
Apparently in 2017 Zombies still have the urge to hump their sisters?

How** the hell did you pull that off?![]()
When I was a teenager both my sister and several of her friends were attractive.
I didn’t think romantically about my sister at all, though i was certainly attracted to her friends.
Later I became a teacher. Although I encountered thousands of pupils over the decades, I refrained from thinking about any of them sexually.
Agree. The article doesn’t specify, but I’m guessing that’s a world-wide stat. It’s not real easy to find good articles on comparative results between 1st order incest and everyone else!
