I think the self-promotion threads would be the Marketplace.
I agree with the OP put fundraisers in the marketplace. They’d be grouped together in one place perhaps there the generous ones could do good for all requesting help.
I think you’re right, that’s where you put threads if you are trying to sell or give away something to a new home or advertise that you wrote a book or whatever.
