My husband and I both shop online frequently, as do our neighbors in our 2-family house. We get a lot of packages. If we are not home when our packages are delivered, the driver will put them behind the storm door, if they fit. If we are home, the front door is generally unlocked, and I always find the packages inside, on the stairs. If the package is particularly bulky or heavy, I find it up on the landing.
A couple weeks ago, the doorbell rang. There was my UPS driver, with our air conditioner, which he proceeded to carry up the stairs and bring into the hallway for me. This seems to me to be above and beyond the call of duty. There is no reason he couldn’t have just left it on the front porch. I thought to myself, “I should send a note to the main office commending this man for his thoughtful service. His superiors should know what a wonderful job he is doing.”
Then I remembered a friend who trained to work as a UPS driver and quit after just a couple weeks because the pressure to perform quickly and efficiently was so unreasonable. The person who trained him followed him around with a stopwatch, timing each delivery. So it occurs to me that perhaps pointing out how this particular driver is being so thoughtful and helpful might actually get him in trouble.
Is there anyone on the board who can advise me? Does UPS still push its drivers to be a speedy as possible or is there now more of a push towards customer service?
