U.P.S.

The U.P.S. guy showed up to make a delivery at my house while I was at work.

He stopped in the lane 20 yards from the house and beeped the horn repeatedly until my wife went out into the snow wind and cold to investigate. She had to put the baby in the crib and carry the monitor outside.

He made her come into the truck, and handed about about a 40 pound package to her.

He refused to carry it to the house even though my wife explained that she just recently had a caesarian section.

My wife had to leave our baby unattended and risk injury to do this man’s job.

Just venting, sorry.

Vent! Vent away! Scream a little, while you’re at it. The UPS guy was a complete asshole to your wife! What the fuck was he thinking?
If you don’t mind, I’d like to throw in an aside vent, m’self- screw you, FedEx, for shipping everything out half-an-hour early with no advance notice, so the really important stuff I needed to get to the FedEx office never had a chance to get sent out on time. Hey, if you had some sort of public policy that you need to change closing times, it would be one thing; but just shutting down your doors half-an-hour early with a hand-written note on the door don’t help me none. Bastards.

I loathe UPS. They come to your home (or wherever) when most people are at work. (And receiving packages at work is frowned upon.) They’re not open on Saturdays, so they are unreachable then. If I receive a package notice, I have to drive to downtown L.A. on some of the nation’s most congested roads, and I MIGHT make it before they close. They no longer leave the packages at the neighbourhood depot that is easily reachable by those of us on the West Side.

But wait! There’s more!

The driver who “served” our area was unbelievably lazy. I was actually at home when a package arrived. The driver didn’t even come to my apartment (and this is only a 30-unit place; not a 1000-flat tower). The manager saw him leave a note without coming inside the gate (which I would have opened for him if he had bothered asking". Rather than trying to see if people were home, he had the habit of just dumping them on the manager, which pissed her off to no end. As I said, this isn’t a large place. Complaints to UPS seemed to be ineffective. I was left with the impression that “Well, since they have a union, there’s nothing we can do to improve service.”

I always insist that packages be sent by Parcel Post. It’s just as fast and if I miss the delivery (which I will almost all of the time) I can just pop down to the post office to pick it up. (To ensure security, I’ve left instructions that packages are not to be left at my door.) If the sender (always a business) sends it by UPS anyway, I refuse delivery by UPS and have them send it by Parcel Post. FedEx is open Saturdays and they’re nearby so I can get there before they close, so that’s a secondary means of delivery.

As a consumer, I feel delivery businesses should accommodate me or I’ll take my business somewhere else. The Postal Service and FedEx do this. UPS does not. The only way UPS will change is if enough people stop using them and make it clear why.

Did I mention I loathe UPS?

Scylla:

Call UPS. Even if you don’t know the person’s name, they can track him down. And hopefully shoot him down like a rabid dog.

Still trying to think of something witty to say here

That’s bullshit. They’re a goddamned delivery service, they’re supposed to actually DELIVER the stuff. File a complaint with them, and have your wife see a doctor…IANAL, but I’d bet that y’all could hold them liable if your wife is “damaged” (for lack of a better word) in any way.

Bastard.

“…being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage.”

UPS Has gone straight downhill ever since the strike. I’m not saying that the strike was without merit, but ever since then, the quality really has suffered.

I’m with Zeb.

Make a phone call to UPS and get a manager on the phone. They do know who and when delivered the package, just be sure to have the shipping number handy when you call.

That’s outrageous!

UPS won’t do anything about their drivers…i took a day off of school, waited at a friend’s HOUSE for a package…never came…saw the driver go by…ran out after him…never stopped…called UPS…driver said that no one was home. he never even stopped. and this was a SMALL package. happend twice with the same package. we waited a week for it (it was around the holidays).
filty bastards

Wow, I’ve never had a problem with those people, but yeah, sue the fuckers if necessary, have the guy’s job. Godammit, women during, after, and before pregnancy, especially c-section! He made her go outside and carry that shit in? If htey don’t fire him, beat the shit out of him! No one will complain.

I sold my soul to Satan for a dollar. I got it in the mail.

I seriously hope you called and complained!!!

May I add mysupport to suggesting you call and raise hell? I had a somewhat similar problem with UPS a while back at work, because the idiots who drive the trucks consistently parked their vehicle NOT ONLY over a safety-yellow pavement sign “NO PARKING”, but they ALSO managed to park so the ass-end of the truck blocked my parking space and prevented me from leaving. I took the number off the truck and went right back inside, got online, and went to the website listed on the side of the trucks and burned up the keys!

Perhaps it helped that I have a physical disability and I warned the local UPS distribution center that I could activate the phone tree of the local Disabilities Coalition and have several dozen people on crutches and in wheelchairs blocking the entrance to their parking lots, along with plenty of local media coverage.

You better believe I got an apology – I wasn’t about to back down until I did. And it hasn’t happened since.
