Question regarding guys and earrings

Unless you’re a pirate, you shouldn’t wear them.

I’m 36. I have my left ear pierced twice and my right ear once.

My wear pattern has been as follows:

=> 22 (embarrassing) dangly earrings in each ear.
=> 24 two rings in the left, stud in the right.
=> 27 two rings in left, nothing in right
=> 30 medium ring and tiny ring in left
=> 34 one ring in left
=> 35 the ring fell out in bed one night, and I haven’t put it in yet.

So it seems to be wearing off in my case. But I did just get a tattoo!

Ed Bradley from 60 Minutes wears one all the time. And he’s fast approaching geezerville. I think it looks great. I don’t like overdone piercings on anyone – man or woman. I have pierced ears and I’m thinking of getting a second one in one ear, but that would be the limit.

An old friend of our family just got an ear pierced. He’s in his 70s and was very close to death not too long ago. His wife just shakes her head. My mother thinks he’s nuts.

Well, he is a bit goofy, but the earring has nothing to do with it. He’s of age and paid for it himself - No biggie.

IMO, it all depends on why your ear is pierced (or why you continue to wear rings in your piercing). If your piercing says “Look how young/hip/rebellious I am”, then 24 would be about the outside limit. However, if your piercing says “This is the style I’m comfortable with, and I really like it”, there’s no age limit on that!

I pierced my left earlobe for a silver ring back in '79, when I was 18. NOBODY over the age of 35 was wearing them then, except maybe Country Joe McDonald.

I remember seeing Escape from New York when it was in theaters in 1981, and thinking that Lee Van Cleef looked pretty damn good with that grey hair and gold stud. I’ve never since thought twice about being “too old.”

[sub]PS: I am a pirate.[/sub]

I am pretty old, and I dont ever remember a time when wearing just one earing was cool. I dont believe it.

Why would anyone think there would be an age limit to wearing ear rings? Is there an age limit for when women should no longer wear earings?

I think if males wear earrings after the age of 12, then it doesnt matter how old you are anytime after that.

13, 33, 63, what is the difference after 12 and who cares?

I have a parrot and an earring.

For all you know I have a wooden leg also. Maybe an eye patch.

This places me far closer to piratude than you, matey.

Arrr.

:shiver me timbers smiley:

      • Any age is too old. Earrings are for girls or queers. It’s not rebelious anymore, you don’t have to do it yourself–you can pay $30 and get it done at the mall.
  • For that matter except for wedding rings, jewelry is for girls.

I think earrings on guys of any age are pretty dorky, myself.

But then, I’ve never dated a guy who liked to wear jewelry of any kind, so that’s just my preference.

I wish mr zoogirl would wear an earring!

He’s just turned fifty and has long hair that has gone completely silver. (His mom’s was white by the time she was 22).
I pierced his ear, oh, must be eighteen years ago, but he let it grow in.

I like him in a leather jacket too!

I’m 36 and I have 5 in my left ear and 3 in my right.

Oh yeah,. one in my nose (which I don’t wear anymore) and one in my right nipple.

Strewth!! you do lead a restricted social life!
My ex and my oldest son both have earrings (one each) and my son had one under his bottom lip as well for a while, but that has gone. They are 40 and 25 respectively and neither is gay. (or related)

So, no watch or necklace either?

      • Nope. Pocket watch, and no necklaces.

Except for hopefool’s dad, mentioned above, I don’t know of anyone who thinks of earrings as rebellious. I currently have three gay friends, and none of them sport any piercings. I know dozens of straight guys with pierced ears.

But yeah, only a fag would wear a wristwatch.

What about a medical alert bracelet, watch, or necklace? Surely, they must be viewed favorably in your world.

Holy shit! I’m older than Ukelele Ike!

Yes, I have one earring. And I will continue to wear it as long as it embarasses my children.

I really hate restrictive attitudes like this, but as a side issue, I do sometimes carry a pocket watch instead of wearing a wristwatch. Doug’s comment makes me wonder if there was cultural objection to wearing wristwatches when they first came out, the way some people object to earrings on men today? Of course, I beleve the earliest wristwatches were all Rolexes, and extrememly costly, so it’s not like it would have become a widespread trend until later.

When I was growing up if a guy had an earring (I think in the left ear) that meant he was gay.

None of the guys I know wear earrings except for two of my sons friends. (ages 15) It really looks awful on the kids because they have very big gages in their ears and they are stretching the holes beyond the “average” or “normal” size.

I don’t like earrings on guys. I think Harrison Ford looks silly.
