I don’t get it. I don’t remember who any of these people are. Who is the Indian girl again? And who is Dave? For that matter, how do we know Steve? (I get that the rest of them are not necessarily real.) And is it supposed to be him who’s getting beaten up, or is that someone else?

I can’t recall Dave or the girl ATM, but Steve has been Marten’s friend for years. He just hasn’t been in the strip for a long, long time. I think the girl was his girlfriend, Meena, but don’t quote me on that, I’d have to dig through the archives to be sure and I can’t do that at work.
ETA: Oh, and, yes, that is Steve getting beaten up. The alt text implies that the sequence may be real, or it may be an alcohol-induced fantasy.
Yeah, Steve was seeing the girl (Meena sounds right), who was living with her ex-boyfriend Dave.
Looks to me he lost his girl, stayed drunk for some time, and would (almost) rather make up some crap than talk about his real life.
And, since we’re on it, I don’t know who the person is that linked to this inane soap opera, but damn you, I’m hooked on this stuff. It’s like low-grade crack that comes in meager doses.
And Steve had issues with Dave because he is just so damn perfect. One of those people who are so nice you just want to punch them in the face. Meena and he used to date but then she couldn’t handle his perfection so she cheated on him (Dave).
I really should be doing homework right now…
Yeah, Meena is the pathologist who when last seen was still living with her ex, Dave.
