Questions about converting formats in iTunes

I have a problem I haven’t been able to get help with in computer forums. I have a bunch of music in Apple Lossless which I’ve sorted into playlists. I want to convert it to AAC; I’ve already backed up the lossless files to an external drive in case I want them again.

I can highlight songs, choose “Create AAC version”, and it does it, but it just dumps the AACs into my library. I then have to go get them and put them into the playlists I want. Is there any way to have it convert files to AAC and have the new versions appear in the same playlists that the old ones were in?

I can’t help you, but I’ve been encountering the same issue this week, when converting video files in itunes. They seem to only appear as new files in the main library, and don’t bother to duplicate themselves in any playlists that the original file was in. I haven’t been able to find a solution, but maybe you could find or request something at the Doug’s applescripts website…

Regular playlists are just lists of files. The AAC versions are different files, so they don’t get magically added to the playlists.

Use smart playlists instead of regular playlists. Use criteria that will cover both the old and new files (artist, album, whatever). Later you can add “kind is AAC” to the criteria to remove the old versions.
