Alright. There is a heart message board but they only allow a certain number of posts a day, so i probably wont be able to post for a few days so i am coming here. here is my heart condition, any guesses on what it may be.
I am 23, my blood pressure is about 150/100 on average (i take nothing for it). My heart rate is about 93 resting. Even though i started exercising every other day 4 months ago it is still at 93 bpm. I assumed it would go down but nope.
Around age 17 i noticed that sometimes when i was intellectually contemplating something very new, stressful, or different that i would feel a collapsing, fluttering in my chest. After about 5-10 seconds of this, the fluttering feeling would go away and my heart would beat once really hard, then pause for about 2 seconds, then beat really hard again. over the course of 20-30 seconds my heart would beat softer and faster until i was at my regular 90 bpm of soft (i.e., regular) beating. Its almost like my heart stopped, then slowly restarted, beating harder to compensate for the lack of number of beats. I have never passed out from this, which is relevant because i think it only takes 5 seconds of interrupted blood flow to lead to unconsciousness.
about 80% of the time when this happens i am, like i said, contemplating painful, new or stressful situations i may find myself in or have been in. So i am assuming this is stress related but i don’t know what it is.
I should probably see a cardiologist but i am an uninsured college student who doesn’t think a multi thousand inspection for this is a good spending of money. And i’ve had this since i was a few months into 17 (i was having a very very stressful time at that age), i’m 23 (almost 24) now and haven’t died yet so i am guessing that isn’t going to be a problem for a while.
But you really need to see a doctor about this. My doctor says that every point above 80 pulse is 1 less year of my life. Are you otherwise healthy? This could be a factor. And you should really talk to a doctor about how you exercise. Some exercises could be bad for you.
Go to a clinic and pay it off over time. Seriously. Palpatations or heart flutter can be a sign of something very bad… Do not become a statistic. please.
If your blood pressure is really running 150/100 on average, you have hypertension and need treatment for it.
You also need to see a physician abut the cardiac arrhythmias you’re describing. There are many different things that can trigger an irregular heartbeat of the type you’re describing; some of them are minor, while others can indicate a potentially life-threatening condition. It’s dangerous to try to diagnose what’s going on in your case via a discussion on an internet messageboard.
As for whether a multi-thousand dollar workup is worthwhile - that depends. You apparently have a heart problem of some type; some of them are nothing but a minor annoyance, while others can cause a person to drop dead. How comfortable are you with that gamble? That nothing bad has happened yet means nothing; you simply can’t know if this is a potentially serious problem unless you either have it investigated, or collapse and wind up in the either ER or the morgue. Don’t play games with your health; have it checked out.
This is likely to be related to stress as opposed to a thyroid condition or heart rhythm problem, but you should get this checked out by a family doctor, internist or cardiologist anyway.
Does your school have a medical school that might want to use you as a guinea pig for someone learning how to use heart testing equipment? Seriously. There’s got to be a way to work out the finances for something potentially this important.
IANAD, but I’ve had a heart attack back in '96. From this experience I learned that I had a blocked feeder to the sparkplug. I supposed that if I hadn’t listened to the pain I experienced I’d either be dead or be paralyzed by a stroke.
If I had my druthers, I’d take dead over being zombied for many years. I was 39 at the time.
If you’re only 23 and having heart problems, that’s a real scary thought to be zombied simply for NOT seeking medical attention asap. As far as the bill goes, you can pay $1.00 every month for the rest of your life and they can’t do a thing about it. Money ain’t everything when it comes to your health.
