Questions about the "other" boards

Thank you for the answer.

I thought it was nice another board opened and I received an actual E-Mail from one of the mods at said board to join. Apparently they can appreciate the occasional poster who is not one of the worlds key brains who might weigh in on something of lets say, a lower class of information. You know, the guy that fixes your car or digs ditches, or otherwise looks at something like being a carpenter as a job, not a hobby.

Just visited one of these boards and this part of the registration agreement made me chuckle (My bolding):

I know the changes to the Pit aren’t the only issue people have with this place, but still… I laughed…

Grim

Hey, they invited ME, which might be a negative in some Doper’s eyes, but it’s a great big + in mine!

Or, of course, it might be that they’re anxious to build numbers and are emailing everybody whose address they can get hold of.

But then I’m a cynical sort of guy.

I can pretty much guarantee that’s merely boilerplate that either came with the forum software or dug up on the 'net someplace; more likely the former.

(bolding mine)

In practice, that’s not true.

You closed a thread where I made a play on the name of the SDMB (calling it the Shark Jump Message Board) that merely mentioned another board and in an asterisked section at the bottom suggested that it might be worthwhile to check it out or join. At no point did I name it, and I did not post any links (although bluecanary did, but I can’t help that).

I understand that you and some other posters here did not find “Shark Jump Message Board” to be funny in the least. But so what? If you closed every thread here that had bad jokes in it you wouldn’t have much left.

You started a thread to share a joke about this board you made on another board. Some threads are too pointless even for MPSIMS, and the potentially relevant part (other boards of interest) was already covered, so it was locked. You’re misrepresenting your own post at this point.

I’m curious exactly how pointless is too pointless, and how does one determine such a thing? One can not. Can you give me a link to any other thread that has been closed for being too pointless? You can not do that, either.

Do you understand that “pointlessness” has no minimum or maximum amount–that there are no gradations, no degrees of “pointlessness”? Something either has a point or it doesn’t.

There is no such thing as “too pointless”, at least, not outside of your own head. IOW, you are using the nonsense term as a thinly veiled euphemism for “anything that really irks you, even though it doesn’t violate any board rules, and so you desperately need to make some shit up to make it disappear.”

This bullshit game-playing and logic-raping is why THIS board has Jumped the Shark.

It is why THIS board has become the Shark Jump Message Board. And you are right about one thing–that is certainly not funny at all.

Just very, very sad.

I’m not a fan of the philosophy of closing threads for being “too pointless,” whatever that means, but there are plenty of examples:

Owls!

NoBODY…

I was thinking…

I joined in '05. I lurked for a long time before that. I am aware of the general opinion people have toward Opalcat. It was my way of saying that I agreed with wring but was meant to be funny. Oh well, even Carlin had clinkers.

Well… you got me there! I guess on the SDMB there is such a thing as “degrees of pointlessness” and some threads have been deemed “too pointless” to continue.

Ironically, this message board itself is now considered “too pointless to continue” by many (former) members here.

Since the questions in the OP have been answered and this thread is going far afield, I think we can safely close it.
