Questions for the Anti-Gun (and former anti-gun) crowd...

1; Have you actually held a gun?
Yes, once

2; do you know how a gun operates? (any firearm)
Only in a broad theoretical sense

3; have you actually fired a gun?
No; I’ve been in the presence of people firing guns a couple of times (all for completely stupid reasons, such as trying to shoot songbirds)

4; did you enjoy the experience or not?
N/A

5; did using the gun change your mind about them? (E.G. you started out as an anti, but found out you liked them after trying them)
N/A

6; for the former antis, what made you change your mind and give shooting a try?
N/A

“I’m simply curious how you came about to disliking firearms”

  1. I think on the whole broad-based private ownership of firearms does more harm than good, in that their socially-beneficial uses are either trivial or rare, while their socially-detrimental uses, while still (thankfully) fairly rare, have a disproportionate human cost,
  2. They have a high potential for misuse, and are poorly regulated over most of this country,
  3. The most visible and vocal proponents of “gun rights” tend to be completely irrational about any discussion of their potential for misuse and the degree to which they should be regulated.

OK, I’ll humour the OP. I’m not totally anti-guns, but I think there should be a lot of control, similar to what is found in Australia and the UK:

1; Have you actually held a gun?
Yes – the last time visiting a friend living on a farm in Illinois, who goes hunting for game on his land from time to time. I held one of the guns that he uses for hunting, and went hunting with a friend of his, though I did not handle a gun while they were out hunting, since i don’t have a hunting license.

2; do you know how a gun operates?
Yes, a pretty good idea.

3; have you actually fired a gun?
Yes, back when I was an air force cadet in high school, I fired .22 and .303 rifles at firing ranges.

4; did you enjoy the experience or not?
I was a bit frightened about fired a .303, because of being warned about the recoil, but I guess I enjoyed the experience.

5; did using the gun change your mind about them?
No.
