Quick! Give me (or link me) a primer on men's fashion!

Ouch!

At least it’s something you’ve got the receipt for, so that will make the claim easier…

A brown suit?!

Baby steps…baby steps. He likes brown, he does not like suits. Ergo, he chose a brown suit. Believe me, it’s better than anything in his closet!

Still no bag. The airline “thinks” it’s still in Mexico. Kill me now.

Hmmm… I think I ought to elaborate on that. I’m 6’4" and I used to be as thin as a rake. Basically what Gomiboy said - and I’m now a stone heavier than him - though I’d allow a light pinstripe for the first suit. But brown is simply not done; a brown suit might be an alternative to a sports jacket and breeches for outdoor use, not for office or formal wear.

As an alternative for the future, he might consider a blazer and well-pressed slacks.

Well, I think that’s why it was acceptable to him. It’s not TOO formal - it’s the casualest suit that’s not linen. The very last thing in the world (almost literally) he wants to look like is his brother the lawyer. Being in academia, while I don’t agree with him that he can get away with tweed jackets with leather elbow patches and long hair in a ponytail forever, I do agree that he needs less formal formalwear than an office person. There’s lots of brown suits in the hallways of the university where he works now.

And the wedding was an outdoor Zapotec (sp?) ceremony in Mexico so it WOULD HAVE been appropriate there, as well. Y’know, if it had a shirt with it.

I think maybe in that first thread it somehow turned into a “make my husband conform!” thing, but that’s not it at all. I want him to be comfortable, and I want him to be himself, just…up a notch.

I was going to say the airline didn’t lose that suit, some one got rid of it.

I would like to PM you on this subject if I may.

Absolutely. My PM is active.

Sorry to hear your bag was lost - that sucks. It took BA 6 days to get my bag to me the last time I flew to the US. Turns out bags can’t fly unaccompanied anymore, so they had to ship it fedex, which required shipping it across London from Heathrow to Standsted on a truck which took a day and a half, then 3 days for FedEx to get it to Seattle. That truly sucked!

As to the controversy of the brown suit - it’s fine. Brown is fine. For a daytime event, brown can be very nice. It’s just not very formal. But for his next suit, get him to buy a black one. Black for evening events, brown for daytime events, and as suggested pressed slacks and a navy blue blazer for business, and he’s sorted.

Although I agree with V.Nabokov (and posters here) that gentlemen don’t wear brown suits, can someone explain this convention?

No, because I don’t agree. It’s less traditional, sure, but brown suits have a long history and have been worn off and on for decades by men.

Nothing wrong with a brown suit as long as it doesn’t resemble a shag carpet. Light brown, dark brown, just make sure it works and you can pull it off.

Of course, I don’t own a brown suit, but my birthday present last year was a medium-brown corduroy sport coat.

I just bought a brown suit last weekend, but, yeah, I wouldn’t wear it out to a formal setting. I was looking for something I could wear during the summer at a nicer restaurant that had a patio.
