(I was entranced by the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver back in the day, when I collected Fantastic Four comics. I don’t know why, but I loved them, even though her ‘power’ was the stupidest thing ever. Wanda and Pietro!
That’s all.)

That seems an incredibly sexist position to have.
Is The Vision going to be in it? How about Yellowjacket and The Wasp?
Quicksilver is awesome. They can put him in every movie as far as I’m concerned.
As for how he got his powers, in a world without mutants? Let’s just say he was bitten by a radioactive racecar. I’d rather Avenegers 2 didn’t waste a lot of time on origin stories anyway.
I would be willing to bet they don’t blow it off like that.
Magneto’s mutant children? Didn’t the High Evolutionary (Earth II) play a role? I don’t think we need to know that. Stick the origin story in a web comic or something. There’s always Wikipedia.
I remember an Avengers Ultron storyline, arted by George Perez I think, wherein Ultron had himself some sort of encephalo-beam that was creaming everyone except Scarlet Witch. Ultron was invincible to any form of attack except her probability power. She had him on the ropes when Captain America got in the way all macho like and they all ended up getting captured.
So, I wonder if Scarlet Witch is there for her unique anti-Ultron ability?
I’m just remembering her role in most of the early Avengers comics. She was nearly always the first one to be taken down in a fight, and the authors didn’t seem to know what to do with her except have her be a love interest: she had a crush on Cap, but that didn’t work with his having his own magazine; when the Vision came along she was relegated to the role of his girlfriend, which caused tension between her and her brother Quicksilver. “Probability control” powers don’t lend themselves readily to action shots in a visual medium.
Since Joss is writing it, she will probably have a better role than mere eye candy.
I haven’t heard about the Vision, but since Ultron created him to attack the Avengers, it’s a good possibility. And the answer is apparently No on YJ and the Wasp.
Astonishingly enough, Wanda and Jan were the only female Avengers for something like 115 issues. Seems pretty odd in retrospect.
And will likely be played by Amy Acker.
And frequently barefoot.
It’s not odd, it’s knowing your market. Comic books at this time were written for boys, not teenagers, and you wanted your clientele to identify with your heroes. There weren’t many superheroines because girls didn’t buy comics nearly as much as boys did.
Some of the deals that Marvel struck seem incredibly open. Fox bought ALL mutants? And the FF license includes any character that ever appeared in the FF (such as the Surfer or the Skrulls)? Sooner or later, some Hollywood lawyers are going to make a LOT of money out of these contracts.
Can’t we organise a fan campaign to boycott Fox and Sony movies until they at least play ball with Marvel? Fox seems to be the worst offender. They decided to make a new FF film just so they could hold on to the rights (and lets face it, its going to be a massive flop). They are also doing their best to make sure that Xmen continuity doesn’t make a lick of sense.
There was a rumour that Sony might be willing to sell Spiderman back to Marvel once SM4 is release, as they don’t really want to have to reboot it again, so if we all make a point of not seeing any more of those movies, it should speed things up.
On the other hand, they could just do a few deals behind the scenes (ie you get wolverine for the avengers movie, we get x% of the take). Would make everyone happy, and the studios get to make a big pot of cash
Still incredibly sexist. Why would her role in a modern day movie, using modern day storytelling techniques, in a modern setting using stories clearly not beholden to the originals and written by a man who is seen as the patron saint of “strong female action heroes”…take an incredibly dismissive slant toward a female character?
Okay, there will be a movie with about 7 or 8 male heroes and 2 or 3 females (Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Maria Hill if she turns). Many of the men have their own movie franchises. Joss has said the next movie will be smaller, more personal and more painful. That spells ill for Clint and Natasha, and Wanda alienating her brother and lifelong protector for her love of the Vision is Marvel history, and is personal and painful. Since Ultron’s the villain, the inclusion of the Vision is a likelihood, and the most obvious reason to include Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch is to provide the romance angle.
Yes, comic books are and have been sexist: they were written to appeal to boys first, and then male teenagers later. A number of feminist fans took Joss to task for the limited roll of Natasha in the first film, the lack of superheroines, and the fact that Maria Hill is nearly overlooked completely: and in the sequel, there will be more people crowding the screen.
Back then, Marvel was desperate to make money…they were gasping for air and everyone was convinced comic books were a dead medium. Lee and Marvel were desperate to break into the movies and they wound up making some very bad deals.
and I’m liking this more and more with each thought.
Wrong member of the Whedon company. Summer Glau is the one who’s feet refuse to wear shoes.
I would dearly love if Summer Glau played the Scarlet Witch.
I wouldn’t - too young and teenagery for the part (In my mind) - of the Whedon crew, Amy Acker seems pretty close (if she changes her hair color)
Dear god, don’t let it be that other one - cant think of her name - you know who -
