- State your platform Windows XP Home Edition
- State which version of the platform - Windows XP Service Pack 2
- Give a complete statement of the problem: “When I open my browser and go to a site that is using Quicktime movies, all I see is the Quicktime logo with a question mark in front of it. I can’t view any movies no matter what I do. I’ve installed, deleted and re-installed quicktime twice”
Here is a link to a screenshot of the problem. - List the steps to reproduce the problem - There are none, I just can’t view the movies.
- List error messages in their entirety. No errors except what you see in the picture.
- List any documentation you’ve read - majorgeeks.com, apple faq, quicktime faq.
- List any steps you’ve tried to fix the problem - **deleted, installed, deleted, re-installed quicktime. I’ve also tried different browsers and it doesn’t work in any of my browsers. **
I hate Quicktime; it’s total bloatware. Try the Quicktime Alternative, instead and see if that doesn’t work for you.
Cool, I installed it, but am still getting the same error I posted in my OP. How do I eliminate Quicktime from trying to open the movie and make what you posted my default media viewer?
Can you save a Quicktime movie and play it OK in the standalone QT application? In other words, is the problem purely in the browser? What browser exactly?
Has it always been like this or only since what change or update?
To change the default program for a particular file extension, go into Windows Explorer and click on Tools - Folder Options - File Types. Find the extension (probably .AVI I think) and click on the Change button, navigate to the app you want and that should do it. Windows Media Player is the default for .AVI so you might try that.
Check to make sure that the plugin is registering in your browser. If you have Quicktime but don’t have the plugin installed and recognized by your browser, it won’t show movies in a web page properly.
Another thing to consider is that sometimes Quicktime movies won’t display until the whole movie is loaded. I don’t know what causes it, whether it’s a browser thing, Quicktime, or server-side, but I’ve had to wait until a whole 100+ mb movie downloaded before I could view it in the browser window. No loading bar, no controls, no media window, nothing to let you know what was going on. You might consider downloading the file (Save Target As) so that you at least get a progress bar and can view it independent of the browser.
Quicktime movies have an extension of .MOV, so look for that.
What browser, and what version of Quicktime, are you using? Only the very latest version plays H.264 MP4 compressed movies, which has quickly come to be the most used codec recently.

It only does it within the browser. I can watch a regular movie on Quicktime outside the browser. It does it in all browsers. Just won’t work.
-
I’m using the most recent version of everything, browsers, quicktime etc…
-
It hasn’t always been like this. It just started when Firefox automatically updated Firefox to the most recent versin a few days ago. When it was updated, webpages wouldn’t even load, so I uninstalled the most recent version of firefox and re-installed the second to last version. Ever since, no movies will play in this browser.

Yeah, usually the movies would load right away. Even if there is an ad at the top of a page I’m viewing, I get the Quicktime image with a question mark, just like inthe screenshot I posted. So, I can’t even view animated ads, but that’s a good thing.

I tried changing the file types and made Windows Media Player my default player and it still won’t work.
I am beginning to think that I will have to uninstall my browser or create a new profile and see if that works.
Thanks, guys ! Any other ideas are welcome !
