Quiznos Sub franchises closing - what's up?

I used to go to Quiznos for lunch occasionally, and I thought their subs were pretty good, but the prices just got too high. Here in Canada a standard sub was something like $9. Add in a drink and tax, and you’re looking at $12 for a sandwich and a drink. The ‘premium’ subs were even more expensive. I can get a value meal at Wendys for $5, or a couple of tacos and a drink at Tacotime for $6. Even a Dairy Queen burger combo with a milkshake is only $7.50.

I think they’ve just priced themselves out of the market. For $12, you can get a pretty decent meal at a lot of places.

I can get a hot sandwich and bag of chips at my local Quizno’s for just over $7. I always drink water anyway.

I like their sandwiches but they cost a bit more than other places around and the only thing they offer that is differnt is the toasting. Now Subway does that too.
I can get a sub with three times the meat for the same price at the local Italian place 1/4 mile from Quiznos.

One thing that Quiznos does that turns my stomach is when they dip the meat in something like hot water (to heat it up?) in a little strainer cup. Do they still do this? I picture them using that water over and over all day and then I order the veggie sub.

Hey, that’s another thing that I find off-putting about Quiznos: the “That’s all?”-and-a-bag-of-chips “combo meal.” That’s not a combo meal, it’s almost a sandwich and a fecking bag of chips.

I understand that in some parts of the US potato chips are considered an acceptable side dish, but potato chips really aren’t part of a meal, are they? Potato chips? Really?

That’s the standard side for sandwiches and hot dogs, yep. I don’t mind it when I’m making sandwiches at home, but it tends to be unsatisfying when going to a sub shop. That’s why I adore eegee’s down in Tucson; it’s the only place I’ve been to where they serve fries with the subs as a matter of course.

Do any nationwide sub chains (or semi- at least) have fries available? I see eegee’s is Tucson only. Damn.

The (as far as I know) only Quiznos in Belfast sank after a year or two, but the Subway on the same street is going strong year after year. But then all sorts of shops and small businesses in apparently strong selling locations closed up too, and I can’t say why.

The newsagents/stationery shop on the same street and a convenience store at the rear of one of the university sites both shut down, both were consistently crammed with customers.

I’ve never noticed that Quiznos was that much slower than other sammich places. Here in Beaverton/Hillsboro, OR, we have lost a few to closure, though.

Oddly, one in Hillsboro that had been closed for at least a couple years has very recently reopened in the same location.

Midwest chain Penn Station East Coast Subs has handmade waffle fries. They’re almost better than the sandwiches. This is probably my favorite sub chain, but the prices are high enough that it’s not an impulse buy.

Sorry to bump a sleeping thread, but I happened across some information today that might interest the OP from Retail Traffic magazine:

So not only is Quiznos growing, it’s one of the fastest expanding retail companies at the moment.
