Quotable Foghorn Leghorn!

“That boy is busier than two centipedes at a toe-counting contest!” - Jinx

It’s not a Foghornism, but it was directed at Foghorn Leghorn when the Chicken Hawk begs his father to take him on his first hunt for a chicken. But, the young Chicken Hawk doesn’t know what a chicken looks like! Of course, Foghorn tricks the unsuspecting Chicken Hawk to go after the Dog as a pheasant, IIRC. Eventually, the Dog makes the Chicken Hawk realize he’s no pheasant hawk, and he goes after Foghorn Leghorn once more. Then, his father comes by, tired of listening to Foghorn run his yap and says:

“That’s no chicken, son…that’s a loud-mouthed snook!”

  • Father of the Chicken Hawk!

The cartoon ends with the young Chicken Hawk saying:
“Chicken or Snook, either way he’ll look good on my table!”

  • Jinx

Another vote for: “fortunately, ah keep mah feathers numbahed for just such an emergency.”

Kenny Delmar as Senator Beuaregard Claghorn on The Fred Allen Show premiered in late 1945. His character was based on a Texas rancher that had given him a ride once.

Foghorn Leghorn premiered in 1946, not very long after the premier of Senator Claghorn. Cartoons record the voice track before doing any of the animation, and animation back then was all done by hand. It would have been excedingly difficult to hear the character on The Fred Allen Show, base the voice on Senator Claghorn, then animate the 'toon in such a short time. Plus the character name of Foghorn Leghorn was given to the character even before a voice had been developed for it. Foghorn Leghorn was based on a Vaudeville character that Mel Blanc saw many years earlier (and who was probably also the source for another similar character on the older radio program “Blue Monday Jamboree”). Source: That’s Not All Folks! by Mel Brooks (with Philip Bashe).

I second Jinx’s “I better not look…I just might be in there!” as one of the best quotes.

One of my favorites, about Prissy Hen:

“That gal reminds me of the road between Dallas and Fort Worth. No curves.”

But yes, Jinx’s is one of the best.

Wasn’t that the baby chickenhawk saying, “One of these things, ah say one of these things, has got to be a chicken!” ?
