Does anyone know the source for this quote “All men have secret thoughts that would shame hell”? I once heard it was Robert Louis Stevenson, but is that so, and where?
A Google on “secret thoughts” “shame hell” turned up only one reference, here, attributed to RLS. Should be able to get something authoritative in a minute. Gotta drag out Bartlett’s.
Hmm. I only have the Shorter Bartlett’s and Seldes’ The Great Quotations here (I have got to finish unpacking!), and both were negative for this quote. I did a little more Googling, too, with no success. I’m guessing it’s his, all right, based on that one reference, but that it’s fairly obscure.
